Departmental Overview

KALX is a 500-watt, Class A FM radio station, licensed and regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. The station broadcasts alternative music and information programming, and serves the campus and the surrounding communities of the Greater San Francisco Bay area 24 hours a day, 365 days a year both over the broadcast airwaves and simulcast on the web. Students and community volunteers receive training at the station to enable them to participate in all aspects of the station's operation, including on-air announcing, program production, and station management. Between 200-250 volunteers participate in 11 departments, including news, sports, music, public affairs, publicity, and operations. Staff turnover is high due to the volunteer nature of participation at the station. Programming includes: alternative music programming, news, several hours of public affairs programs each week, and play-by-play of Cal sports. The station operates on a $325,000 budget with approximately 30% of the budget covered by private fundraising.

The KALX Station Manager has independent responsibility for the campus radio station including the development and management of content, planning, coordinating and administering programs, processes, and facilities in radio, including programming, production, scheduling, training, budget/accounting, and implementing station-related events including annual fundraising pledge drives.

Responsibilities

STATION MANAGEMENT

  • Oversees and manages directly and through subordinates the campus radio spaces and operations for the KALX Radio, and Federal Communications Commission licensed and regulated FM radio broadcast station.
    • Formulates approaches, policies, and procedures to address major station management, fiscal, and personnel issues.
    • Motivates a highly diverse group of volunteers to work cooperatively on programmatic and fundraising projects and meets its operational /service commitments as a fully licensed radio operation.
    • Provides staff oversight that may include station staff, student, campus employee, and community (non-campus) volunteers.
    • Provides managerial/supervisory oversight of employees including recruiting, selecting, evaluating, and, as necessary, taking coaching and corrective action.
    • Interprets FCC rulings and other radio related regulatory policies and initiates appropriate changes in station policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
    • Responsible for ensuring station operating equipment is maintained including broadcast studios, IT broadcast tower and transmitter infrastructure equipment and media library.


FISCAL MANAGEMENT

  • Provides fiscal management, including developing an annual budget, allocating resources and making funding use decisions.
  • Ensures unit operates within budget constraints.
  • Provides reports on station operations, finances and programming as required.
    • With approval from the Chief Academic Technology Officer, manages the fiscal operations of KALX radio station.
    • Is responsible for oversight and growth of fundraising activities to increase budgetary foundations.
    • Initiates and oversees identification, acquisition, and installation of broadcast equipment.


CAMPUS / COMMUNITY LIAISON

  • Represents the department and campus on internal and external boards and professional and trade organizations.
  • Provides leadership for programming and policy with the University and the college radio community.
  • Initiates and cultivates partnerships.
  • Expands upon RTL's partnership with the campus Discovery Initiative.
  • Provides staff leadership and coordinates the Chancellor's Radio Policy Advisory Board.
    • May participate in developing emergency preparedness strategies.


MANAGEMENT AND CULTURE OF VOLUNTEERS

  • Represents the Division of Undergraduate Education by ensuring issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice serves as foundational values for the radio station.
    • With support from RTL staff, creates and implements planning to ensure issues associated with diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and justice are prioritized.
    • Responds to and thinks creatively about the changing needs of volunteers and radio listeners.
    • Works with RTL staff to ensure volunteers acquire appropriate on-boarding and training.


Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of college radio station operations, including FCC and broadcast rules/regulations including radio station fundraising regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of programmatic, financial, and operational concepts, principles and best practices around non-profit fundraising.


Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Political acumen and ability to navigate large organizations are a plus.


Salary & Benefits

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $110,000.00 - $130,000.00.
