Departmental Overview

Research, Teaching and Learning Services (RTL) supports Berkeley's ever-evolving teaching and research needs by providing essential, coordinated, policy-aligned tools, services, and expertise to the entire campus. The combination of teaching and research support groups under RTL improves efficiency, encourages collaboration, and creates opportunities to leverage existing resources in new and innovative ways.

Digital Learning Services (DLS) is part of the Research, Teaching and Learning (RTL) organization within the division of the Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education (VCUE). DLS was created in support of the Digital Learning Initiative and the campus's emerging Digital Learning Strategy.

Responsibilities

Management of Instructional Design and Media: Manages, through staff, the development of, digital learning programs.
  • Manages team of project managers, instructional designers, and digital media specialists to produce new courses, revise/update existing courses, and provide ongoing digital learning faculty support.
  • Develops quality standards for course development and ensures all course content is developed in accordance with these standards.
  • Based on available team bandwidth and development needs, sets short and long-term production goals for department and allocates resources appropriately.
  • Communicates production goals and progress regularly to Director and other appropriate stakeholders.


Staff Supervision: Provides direction and guidance to staff members, within the latitude of established HR and campus policies and acts as an advisor to staff members to meet schedules and/or assist with technical issues.
  • Directly supervises project managers, instructional designers, and digital media specialists staff.
  • Oversees performance management and employee development for a staff in consultation with campus Human Resource departments.
  • Develops and monitors staff goals and objectives, performance standards, internal departmental controls, and evaluation tools for management oversight within a deadline-driven, results-oriented department.
  • Sets short-term goals and priorities for staff.
  • Ensures all direct reports receive ongoing constructive feedback and coaching in addition to participating in formal annual performance evaluations and goal setting.


Campus Relationships and Service Delivery: Oversees delivery of online course offerings for programs offered in partnership with DLS and other campus units.
  • Works with campus partners to prioritize course development work for online and digital programs.
  • Maintains excellent relationships with campus partners and ensures DLS meets agreed upon delivery goals.
  • Proactively identifies potential issues and troubleshoots problems as they occur.
  • Promotes DLS online service offerings to campus academic units.
  • Works with senior leadership to plan and develop new programs with campus academic units including scoping and fee-for-service costing, negotiating responsibilities, and drafting MOUs and other agreements.


Required Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of online learning including principles, theories, concepts, and technology.
  • Solid knowledge of the current trends and potential future developments in the online learning field.
  • Solid knowledge of the campus, including its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, and infrastructure.
  • Solid knowledge and skills in financial and personnel administration and management techniques, including understanding of guiding principles, relevant laws, policies, and best practices.
  • Solid skills to select, train, supervise, guide and evaluate subordinate staff, and take corrective action as required.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening, and political acumen skills.
  • Solid analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Solid problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
  • Solid project management and strategic planning skills.
  • Solid skills to ensure production of high quality work within budget and time constraints.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
