Departmental Overview

The Division of Social Sciences in the College of Letters & Science is the largest of Berkeley's academic divisions, with an annual budget of approximately $135M, approximately 280 permanent faculty FTE and undergraduate enrollment which averages over 31,000 per semester. It is also among Berkeley's most heterogeneous divisions, with faculty studying every dimension of the human experience. Its academic departments include African American Studies, Anthropology, Demography, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Geography, Gender and Women's Studies, History, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. The Division of Social Sciences is also home to the Interdisciplinary Social Science Programs, the Social Science Matrix, D-Lab, and several related research units.

Responsibilities

  • The Communications Director has responsibility for external communications, in collaboration with campus partners, that amplify timely editorial/media relations messaging and objectives, and the content and public relations for the Division of Social Sciences official channels, in accordance with the overall communications policies set by the University.
  • Independently oversees and executes daily and regular communication content, and activities, as well as regular analysis of divisional communication goals.
  • Anticipates potential areas of interest or concern and develops communications strategies to successfully and effectively address these areas to the media and various audiences.
  • Creates and edits a variety of written materials.
  • Closely monitors all media channels and responds to messages and/or alerts appropriate team members of news or potential issues relating to the Division in a timely manner.
  • Ensures communications are both inclusive and ADA compliant.
  • Determines through fact-checking and other techniques the veracity and relevance of information provided by the origin and expert sources.
  • Conceives, develops, and brings to fruition, interest stories that enhance the public's understanding and appreciation of the division and its societal contributions.
  • Independently develops and coordinates visual assets for social, web, and print uses, including, but not limited to: photography needs, graphic design, media releases, presentations, and leadership talking points. Promotes articles/news/scholarship to key audiences.
  • Writes copy that is tailored to the individual media channel being utilized and that best increases the Division's visibility.
  • Provides regular updates/reports on status of communication efforts using applicable data analytics tools.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with both actual and potential sources and internal/external constituencies, including external media.
  • Provides advice and consultation as requested / required on appropriate methods for actively engaging the media.
  • Cultivates positive relationships with journalists to assure optimal visibility for the Division and its programs, including placing or "pitching" stories of interest to the public.
  • Participates in regular meetings with the Division's leadership and campus PR and communication groups
  • Attends high-profile Divisional events.


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of principles, practices, concepts, and technical requirements in news, media communications and media/public relations.
  • Experience developing and creating communication strategy and media content.
  • Experience working for higher education, nonprofit, or media/journalism with advanced skills in understanding and effectively utilizing all news/media mediums including broadcast news, the internet, social media and emerging technologies
  • Self-driven, highly organized, and advanced time management skills required.
  • Ability to understand complex concepts and communicate them simply and clearly adhering to appropriate brand tone and values.
  • Advanced judgment, analytical and decision-making skills, advanced political acumen and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent editing and proofreading skills.
  • Advanced skill in problem recognition and resolution.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and video conferencing platforms with the ability to learn new computer programs and software systems.
  • Applicable software proficiency to execute job responsibilities with intermediate knowledge of graphic design platforms such as Canva, Photoshop, inDesign.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), and ability to apply and integrate core concepts of DEIB into everyday practice.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of the Social Sciences Division, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs, policies and infrastructure, and knowledge of issues in higher education as well as current location concerns and issues.


Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $110,000 to $135,000.
