WELCOME TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE!

Thank you for your interest in this position. The Stage Technician-Sound operates, maintains, adjusts, and repairs sound and projection equipment to support the Theatre Arts Department, Performing Arts Center and other college venue productions. There is currently one vacancy in the Theatre Arts Department. This position is scheduled to work a variable hours schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. The current vacancy is scheduled to work variable hours, and will receive a corresponding 5% pay differential in addition to the stated salary.

The ideal candidate for this position will collaborate with multiple theatre production specialties and will apply their experience and expertise to independently install and arrange audio components, while applying a high level of precision. This person will have professional experience handling, installing, and operating current industry standard technology and will also have a strong understanding of safety procedures within a theatre setting.

*Holidays, vacation, and illness days listed above assume a 12-month, 40-hour per week schedule. Vacation and illness days are prorated for other work schedules.

Salary Placement
New Employees:
Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.

Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.7. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.

About the Selection Process
All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%). Candidates must be successful on the Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a score of 70.00 or better for their name to appear on the eligibility list.

The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the six-month life of the eligibility list, including permanent and/or temporary full-time and/or part-time positions.

Santa Monica College reserves the right to modify the stated selection components and weights prior to the administration of any test.

Test Retake Policy
Based on the District's hiring needs, we may administer multiple recruitments for this job classification (or a related job classification that uses the same test(s)) within the next several months. Candidates must wait a period of 90 calendar days between testing appointments before retesting. Candidates who are ineligible to participate in an upcoming test or interview due to the provided retake period will be notified via email, and will have their highest valid score(s) on any non-weighted (pass/fail) test parts applied toward that recruitment.

Examples of Duties

Sets-up, constructs, operates, and maintains sound equipment for all of the audio needs of the Theatre Arts Department's productions.

Participates in the set-up, and storage of sound and projection equipment.

Orders, stores, issues, receives, checks and inventories tools, equipment, supplies, and related equipment.

Repairs, adjusts and calibrates a variety of sound equipment including but not limited to: amplifiers; tape recorders; mixers; microphones, and projectors.

Assigns work to students in the use and operation of sound equipment.

Maintains a record of expenditures for all materials purchased

Works with directors and other technical staff in the various production phases and in planning productions.

Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.

Examples of essential duties are descriptive and not restrictive in nature and are generally listed in descending order of importance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement:
Associate's degree or equivalent in theater arts or stage design and construction.

Experience Requirement:
Two years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of sound equipment in a technical theater setting.

Education/Experience Equivalency:
Experience and/or education of the same kind, level or amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Licensure and/or Certification:
None
