The Haas School of Business embraces flexible working arrangements for its employees. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with your supervisor to meet role responsibilities and department needs, and are subject to change.

From increased concerns about climate change and resource scarcity to growing public distress over income inequality and environmental injustice, environmental and social sustainability have become a managerial imperative and a key leadership challenge for global business, posing risks and providing opportunities for making breakthrough innovations all along the value chain. Dean Ann Harrison has identified sustainability as one of Berkeley Haas' top three strategic priorities. To make Berkeley Haas the preeminent business school in the area of sustainability, a small team is being created in the Dean's office. The team will collaborate with faculty to expand research in sustainability topics; it will support existing sustainability-focused centers and initiatives (e.g., the Energy Institute at Haas, the Center for Responsible Business, the Sustainable and Impact Finance initiative, the Sustainable Food Initiative, and the Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics) to expand student experiential learning and curricular offerings; it will develop partnerships with thought leaders and corporate partners, and it will support the marketing and career management groups to raise the profile of sustainability at Haas and expand career opportunities in sustainability roles for our graduates. In addition to establishing a Graduate Certificate Program in Sustainable Business and developing a concurrent degree program with the Rausser College of Natural Resources, one of the Dean's goals is to ensure that all Haas students leave Haas with basic "literacy" in sustainability: understanding of the scope, issues, and framing of sustainability challenges and opportunities that they are likely to face in their careers. The sustainability team will work with faculty to incorporate sustainability into all core courses.

Responsibilities

Administers Haas Sustainability team with primary responsibility for administrative and programmatic activities.

  • Support expansion of the Michael's Certificate in Sustainable Business - coordinate communications aimed at growing the number of students enrolling in the certificate and with the centers and Senior Associate Dean for Instruction to expand sustainability course offerings.
  • Work in partnership with Haas MBA Program Offices and Faculty Director to advise students enrolling in the certificate program.
  • Administer delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of program activities and work streams such as the Dean's Holmstrom Sustainability Curriculum Grants program, the Sustainability Industry Survey, and the Haas Sustainability Case Study Compendium.
  • Work with the Executive Director to develop, monitor, and implement a Sustainability Strategic Plan and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Collaborate with Haas media, Marketing, Career Management, and Admissions teams to develop and promote sustainability to support institutional reputation building, student recruitment, student placement, and industry partnerships.
  • May supervise clerical staff and student workers.


Works with program leadership to identify and pursue funding opportunities and revenue streams.

  • In partnership with the Executive Director and the Development and Alumni Relations office, identify current and new sources of corporate and foundation funding to support the Dean's sustainability priority.
  • Prepare, write, and manage grant proposals for philanthropic funders, foundations, and/or government granting agencies.
  • Coordinate grant funding efforts with UC Berkeley Sponsored Projects Office.


Plays a lead role in the program's budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of research initiatives.

  • Manage and distribute program budget. Coordinate with Haas Chief Financial Officer.


Assesses program activities' effectiveness, and recommends changes to content, policies, and procedures accordingly.

  • Track program activities, assess the effectiveness, and recommend changes to program content, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide domain-related expertise and resources to support the Career Management Group's expansion of sustainability-related employment opportunities.
  • Develop processes and communications to improve collaboration and coordination of sustainability activities between Haas faculty, Centers and Institutes, degree program offices, Development and Alumni Relations, marketing, Haas leadership team, and the campus community.


Serves on committees representing the Sustainability Program, participating in short term and long-term planning of program activities.

  • Develop and organize conferences, seminars, industry, and academic events with a wider sustainability team and relevant centers and institutes.
  • Represent the program with various constituent groups as necessary (e.g., Haas Sustainability Task Force).
  • Support Executive Director in developing and administering forthcoming concurrent degree program with the Rausser College of Natural Resources.

Required Qualifications

  • Academic background and experience developing and leading student-facing programs including leadership activities, communications and publicity, industry engagement and partnerships, and large events.
  • Deep subject matter expertise in sustainability.
  • Experience partnering successfully with academic faculty, lecturers, staff, and wider communities to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and strategic results.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Skilled fundraising experience with proven results securing support for academic and experiential student sustainability programs and working in partnership with development teams.
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources, and financial principles and practices.
  • Experience identifying and securing funding sources.
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative budgetary, and financial principles and practices.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills including web content creation, strategic communications, and public speaking.
  • Demonstrated experience with thinking creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Advanced capability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.

Education/Training:

  • Advanced degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.).
  • Experience recruiting and supervising staff.


Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% time (40-hrs a week), monthly paid, exempt position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience up to $118,700.00.
