Departmental Overview
The Division of Ecosystem Sciences examines the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems including agricultural lands, forests, and rangelands, and their interactions with soil, air, water and organisms (microbes, plants, invertebrates, wildlife, livestock). We investigate the role of human activity in ecosystems and the problems humans create, including atmospheric changes and ecological diversity.
Position Summary
The Grantham Lab at UC Berkeley seeks a qualified fisheries technician to assist with the management of, and research on, invasive Sacramento Pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus grandis), in the South Fork Eel River in Northern California during the Spring and Summer. Sacramento Pikeminnow is a large piscivorous cyprinid that was introduced into the Eel River around 1979 and has since expanded its distribution into much of the basin.
Pikeminnow now occur at very high densities in many parts of the watershed and therefore have potential to fundamentally alter the aquatic ecosystem and negatively impact native species-particularly, anadromous species, which must migrate from headwater streams through the mainstem to reach the estuary and ocean. This position was created as part of an interagency collaboration between Berkeley, BLM and the Wiyot Tribe to manage and study Sacramento Pikeminnow in the Eel River to benefit native salmonids. Generally, the successful applicant will be involved in many aspects of pikeminnow suppression and studies involving juvenile salmonids. Duties will include overseeing the operation of a seasonal weir, downloading data from acoustic receivers, conducting snorkel surveys, organizing data files and metadata, and acoustic tagging juvenile salmonids. The successful applicant will stay at remote field stations and camp at times during the position, and have to be motivated to work in small groups or independently. Due to logistics and safety the applicant will need access to a vehicle for the duration of the position to commute between sampling locations.
Responsibilities
- Pikeminnow eradication, monitoring, trapping, and tagging, video and sonar surveillance, and associated studies on the interaction between invasive pikeminnow and native salmonids.
- Overnight backcountry travel through Elkhorn Ridge Wilderness to preform pikeminnow surveys and suppression.
- Snorkel surveys of river fishes
- Organizing data and maintaining metadata.
Required Qualifications
- The position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in hot, cold, and buggy weather.
- Some work activities will be outside typical working hours.
- Much of the work will be physically demanding, and applicants should be able to hike 10 miles in a day with a pack up to 40lbs.
- Applicants must be able to swim, some activities will require immersing in cold water while wearing a wetsuit or dry suit, such as snorkel surveys for fish.
- The ideal applicant will have experience with outdoor pursuits and enjoy spending time outside in remote locations.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits
This is a 6-month, non-exempt temporary position at 85% (34 hrs a week). This position is paid hourly.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $28.04 (Step 1).
