Team Overview:

Data Solutions resides within the broader Berkeley IT Campus Applications & Data unit, which ensures that the University's mission-critical applications and data are aligned, designed, integrated, and managed together. Data Solutions consists of the Data & Analytics team, responsible for campus-wide analytics and reporting, as well as Engineering & Integration Services, responsible for data integration and architectural considerations across campus applications.

UC Berkeley's Data & Analytics team seeks a BI Engineer who will develop and support BI solutions to turn data into actionable insights supporting university decision-making, analytics, and research. The team supports tw analytics platforms built using Oracle Analytics Service and Tableau. An ideal candidate will have solid experience developing reports. As the BI Engineer, the candidate should have solid skills in Report development, writing complex SQL queries, security, testing, troubleshooting, metadata management, and documentation.

Responsibilities

Design:

  • Contributes to the design of new architectural components, developing documentation and translating functional requirements into technical specifications for self-service and curated BI projects.
  • Plans and conducts data analysis efforts, participates in design sessions and collaborates with business ETL developers, architects, technical staff, and critical business sponsors to identify and recommend solutions.
  • Works closely with senior team members to update data models supporting data warehouse/data lake solutions.
  • Helps to maintain data models and data definitions.


Development:

  • Creates and maintains optimal BI solutions under the mentorship of senior analysts.
  • Assembles large, complex data sets that meet functional/non-functional business requirements.
  • Works with data architects and subject matter experts to design and develop data models, security structures and reports across subject areas and technical domains.
  • Identifies, designs, and implements internal process improvements, including automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Under the guidance of architects and senior engineers, implements the infrastructure required for supporting a wide variety of business domains and the growing needs of the campus analytics community.


Standards:

  • Maintains best practices for the design, development and support of BI solutions including self-service analytics; documentation; metadata creation, use and maintenance; and data naming standards.


Support:

  • Works with other team members to continually improve production operations, including independently working on code deployments, bug fixes and overall release management and coordination.
  • Ensures resilient operations stability via disaster recovery and business continuity planning and documentation.
  • Coordinates with database, network and platform services teams on infrastructure capacity planning and implementation.
  • Manages production support for critical BI applications on a rotation basis.
  • Monitors and takes appropriate action to maintain the integrity of the reporting solutions, including security and data quality issues.
  • Responds to and resolves operational problems as necessary.
  • Documents, troubleshoots and resolves day to day data issues.
  • Works with DBA's, system administrators, and other IST support staff to complete scheduled hardware and software maintenance activities.
  • Works with data security officers and auditors to ensure quality assurance programs are compliant with corporate standards.
  • Responds to customer concerns and potential issues.
  • Enforces strategies to ensure the stability and availability of the data warehouse/data lake environment.
  • Completes professional development and training and other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Experience in the installation, configuration and security of BI environments; report development best practices and standards; and data lake/warehouse architectures.
  • Ability to collect basic business requirements and build reporting solutions to convert raw data into usable information for analysts and business users
  • Adept at developing and maintaining reports and dashboards.
  • Robust curiosity across multiple data domains, including student, finance and HR.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Working knowledge of data visualization techniques and tools.
  • Ability to write complex SQL queries across extensive data sets.
  • Experience in scripting languages, e.g. Python.
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with various source data systems, both structured and unstructured.
  • Experience in projects that deliver relevant insights / analytics.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets and tell data "stories" via dashboards and reports.
  • Knowledge relating to logical data design, data lake/warehouse design, data integrations, as well as the management of web content or other unstructured data.
  • Strong written and documentation skills for communicating specifications, processes and metadata to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Agile, quick self-learner, highly self-motivated with a strong sense of product ownership, and creative problem solver.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of Oracle/PeopleSoft Financials, HCM and/or Campus Solutions systems and data.
  • Experience maintaining and developing Oracle Analytics RPD, reports and dashboards.
  • Experience developing Tableau data extracts and dashboards.
  • Experience with data engineering concepts and tools like AWS Glue.
  • Familiarity with Cloud data technology stacks (AWS, Snowflake, etc.) and associated analytics services
  • Familiarity with Data Science concepts.
  • Experience with Master Data Management and communicating its value.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,000.00 - $122,000.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This position is eligible for flexible, hybrid or fully-remote work (telecommuting) based on candidate availability and business needs.
