The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time System Administrator I (Infrastructure) in the Information Technology (IT) division.

"BIG PICTURE" RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the Supervision of the Executive Director, Infrastructure and Information Security, installs and maintains server hardware, operating systems, software, scripted procedures, computer management, programming, and operational support tools associated with the operations of a data center and the administration of Information Technology (IT) systems. Provides training and support of IT systems, coordinates IT application development system projects, and performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

With a focus on supporting the District’s Enterprise Resource Planning and Student Information System, the System Administrator I:

  1. Assists with maintenance and implementation of the District's Information Technology servers and systems, including backup and recovery, troubleshooting/repairing peripheral equipment, scheduling and performing system maintenance, creating and maintaining secure user accounts, configuring system for user access, and troubleshooting/repairing software configurations.
  2. Provides programming support for assigned department(s). Creates and maintains IT system scripts, web applications, and web sites using SQL, HTML, CSS, ASP, JavaScript, and other internet related technologies.
  3. Assists with planning, design, and implementation of additions, upgrades/updates, replacements, or retirement of computer, network, database management, or application systems based on changes in usage and assists in the purchase of hardware and software.
  4. Maintains working knowledge of current industry information, vendor direction, new products, and technical approaches related to department and/or District needs.
  5. Maintains a variety of system logs, documentation and records related to system analysis. Prepares periodic reports on system and database usage/performance.
  6. Ensures the inventory of District IT systems is accurate and up-to-date. Oversees computer system assets and software licensing.
  7. Serves as technical support System Administrator Level 1 for various IT systems and System Administrator Level 2 for systems that have dedicated personnel that serve as level 1.
  8. Performs basic system analysis to determine the impact on the operating system.
  9. Maintains and monitors performance, capacity, data integrity, security, and availability of district wide computer systems. Documents system problems and reports them to IT staff.
  10. Assists with research and analyzes new technology for recommendation, purchase, and implementation. Consults with district staff to determine current and future system needs, design, and operation.
  11. Assists with the implementation of IT projects and assignments with a moderate level of responsibility and independence.
  12.   Facilitates training for dedicated System Administrators and IT staff.
  13. Assists with the development and maintenance of guidelines, operating procedures, instructions, best practices in the utilization of Information Technology systems.
  14. Provides support to Information Technology staff.
  15. Cross-trains and performs the essential duties of equal or lower level classifications/ positions within the department, as needed.
  16. Works in a team environment with other members of IT staff
  17. Serves on various district-wide committees and represent Information Technology’s interests.
  18. Attends professional meetings/conferences to enhance professional development and increase the operational effectiveness of the office, as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Three (3) years of full-time equivalent experience administering data center systems and services.

Education:

Education equivalent to an Associate’s degree (60 semester units) from an accredited institution (including trade school) is required, which includes coursework in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer operations or a related field. Two (2) years of direct experience in addition to that identified above may be substituted for one year (30 semester units) of college. Short-term workshops will not be accepted as fulfilling any part of the education requirement.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience administering Information Technology data center systems and services.
  • Experience administering and maintaining SQL systems and databases
  • Experience supporting ERP systems

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Position requires knowledge of:

  • Basic system administration procedures and techniques;
  • Operating systems: Microsoft Windows desktop and server;
  • Scripting languages: PowerShell, VBScript and JavaScript;
  • Microsoft services: IIS, SMTP, Active Directory, Group Policy, Exchange, SharePoint, Hyper-V, Systems Center, SQL, File, Print, DNS, WINS, Endpoint Protection;
  • Software/Services: Microsoft Office, UniTrends Backup Solutions;
  • Protocols: DHCP, SMTP, FTP, HTTP, TCP/IP;
  • Principles of basic systems analysis;
  • Principles of basic project management;
  • Principles of training and basic instruction reinforcement techniques;
  • Terminology related to networking, hardware, software and operating systems;
  • Methods and procedures used in the testing, maintenance and repair of applications and systems;
  • Internet technologies: HTML, CSS, SSL, web browsers, web servers;
  • Web Programming technologies: ASP;
  • Basic web development, design and maintenance, using standard html code and web development applications;
  • Oral and written communication skills;

Position requires ability to:

  • Use initiative and problem-solving skills in carrying out responsibilities;
  • Maintain IT systems with a high degree of independence;
  • Independently assess IT systems and make recommendations for improvements;
  • Estimate and plan for system maintenance and down time;
  • Develop processes for streamlining system administration tasks;

  • Keep detailed, precise records and handle correspondence effectively;
  • Evaluate and recommend software and hardware solutions based on new and emerging technologies;

  • Use graphic design software to develop, modify and optimize graphics suitable for the web;

  • Proficiently work in a multiple operating system environment using Mac OSX, Windows, and Unix/Linux;
  • Work effectively and demonstrate currency of knowledge with computers and other forms of advanced technology utilized in providing high quality services;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships;
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy;
  • Understand and work within Information Technology department goals and objectives;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Adapt to ever-changing and evolving operations;

SALARY PLACEMENT

Salary placement will be on Range 42 of Classified Represented Salary Schedule B

($5,545.00 - $9,343.00 per month). Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($5,545.00 / $5,881.00 / $6,211.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.

Probationary period for new Classified employees is one year. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.

RETIREMENT: Classified employees contribute to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), a defined benefit retirement plan through the State of California.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sedentary position requires use of a computer and related equipment for extended periods of time; frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; communicating and providing information to others; work outside on all parts of the campus and in varying weather conditions. In the event of an emergency, employees will be relied upon to serve as emergency service workers.
