Summary 
Assists in providing care to infant-to-preschool aged children and assistance at a day care facility that also serves as an instructional lab.  Provides age appropriate child-centered development and functioning exercises, for preschool aged child care. While care is custodial in nature, incumbents are required to facilitate developmental exercises, parenting instruction, and may perform limited medical procedures.
 
Distinguishing Career Features 
The Child Care Assistant is responsible for accommodating the needs of children aged 0-4 in activities from training in proper eating, playing habits, socialization, to developing motor skills.  Advancement beyond this position is possible with additional coursework in early childhood education that satisfies requirements for the position and complies with the state's permit matrix.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities 
Specific duties may vary among departments and jobs.  Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following kinds of duties: 

  • Assists site leadership and teachers by caring for and providing positive play and developmental experiences for preschool aged children.  Assists with supervision and training of student parents and in the activities connected with an infant care center.  
  • Assists with organizing specific activities such as, but not limited to reading stories, basic arts and crafts, individual and group play and games.  Assists in maintaining order by observing and focusing the activities and behaviors of the children in group activities. 
  • Assists teachers by instructing students in the care of children, in areas such as nutrition, hygiene, parenting skills, and age specific child development.  
  • Instructs student parents in hygiene matters such as but not limited to cleaning and disinfecting cribs, furniture, and toys and other surfaces.  
  • Gives each student and child individual and special attention each day.  Responds to each child's particular needs and characteristics.  Makes sure that children receive equal attention in play activities. 
  • Oversees playground activities, accompanies classes on field trips, and may prepare and/or set out snacks and/or meals.  Sits with children on trips and eating, reinforcing proper behavior and hygiene. 
  • Provides personal hygiene assistance to children.  Assists children for short periods of time to accommodate health or mobility needs, including exchange of medical devices or paraphernalia.   
  • Reports any signs of illness or distress observed in the children and assists in dealing with the situation.  
  • Performs light housekeeping to maintain rooms in a sanitary, safe, and orderly manner. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Knowledge and Skills:
The position requires a basic knowledge of child guidance principles and practices and an understanding of the goals and objectives of a preschool-aged child care program in a school district environment.  Requires working knowledge of learning exercises and approaches that are appropriate for student parents.  Requires working knowledge of the needs and behavior of preschool-aged children.  Requires working knowledge of proper sanitization and sterilization methods, as well as cleaning materials and disinfectants.  Requires sufficient human relations skills to interact with student parents, children, and staff. 
 
Abilities:
Ability to perform the essential responsibilities and work tasks of the position.  Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret a teacher's instructions in order to assist in instruction-oriented recreation activities of infant children and learning exercises for student parents.  Ability to understand the needs and differences of children and to reach and engage them in play.  Requires the ability to balance emotional support and discipline to deal with behavior problems in student parents.  Requires sensitivity to the dynamics of teen parenting.

Education and Experience:
The position requires the equivalent of a high school diploma plus experience working with students in a classroom or equivalent environment and successful completion of minimum childcare licensing standards.  Incumbents assigned to infant and pre-school environments may be required to have 2 credit hours Basics of Child Care.  Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for this position.
 
Licenses and Certificates:
May require a first-aid certificate.  May require a valid driver license.
Must present current tuberculosis (TB) clearance and immunity against influenza, pertussis, (DTAP) and measles (MMR).

Physical Abilities:
Requires the ability to perform indoors in an office and/or classroom environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary to moderately active nature.  Requires near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and computer screens.  Requires hearing and speech ability for ordinary and telephonic conversation, to speak to small groups, and to hear sound prompts from equipment.  Requires the ability to move about office, classroom, and school grounds, and reach work materials.  Requires sufficient manual and finger dexterity to demonstrate teaching aids, to point out important words/figures to students, and to operate personal computers.  Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and move supplies, furniture, etc., of light-to-medium weight (under 50 pounds) on an intermittent basis.
 
Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors with minimal safety hazards, yet some exposure to communicable diseases.

Conditions of Employment

This is a regular, part-time (19.5 hours per week), 10-months per year classified position. The normal hours of work will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and Thursday 8:30 am to 12:00 pm.  The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

The Early Childhood Lab School is affiliated with Community Care Licensing Division and adheres to Title 22 regulations. All persons hired must be in compliance with Senate Bill No. 792, Day Care Facilities: Immunizations: Exemptions. This bill requires that any person hired in a licensed facility must present evidence of a current tuberculosis (TB) clearance and immunity against influenza, pertussis, (DTap) and measles (MMR). Persons hired shall receive the influenza vaccination between August 1 and December 1 of each year. A written declaration may be submitted annually stating that an individual has declined the influenza vaccine. If a person meets all other requirements for employment or volunteering, as applicable, but needs additional time to obtain and provide his or her immunization records, the person may be employed or volunteer conditionally for a maximum of 30 days upon signing and submitting a written statement attesting that he or she has been immunized as required. A person is exempt from the immunization requirement if the person submits a written statement from a licensed physician declaring that because of the person's physical condition or medical circumstances, immunization is not safe. The person submits a written declaration from a licensed physician providing that the person has evidence of current immunity to the diseases.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
