Summary
Provides support to instructional computing in a walk-in laboratory environment including common hardware, operating system, network, and application software troubleshooting and support.  Assists students in the proper use of computing facilities. 
 
Distinguishing Career Features
The Instructional Computing Assistant represents the first-level in a career path for technical and instruction support.  The Instructional Computing Assistant provides support to common computer applications, workstations, and dedicated network operations used in higher education, and to record student clock time.  Advancement along this career path is possible to Instructional Associate and Instructional Lab Coordinator based on qualifications and the ability to taken partial leadership and/or subject matter depth.  Advancement potential may also exist to other Information Technology positions such as in User Support at the College or District level, again, based on need.  These positions would support networked and standalone workstations and a full range of desktop productivity and instructional software and require expanded capability in basic network operations, account setup, applying existing computer security and access rules, and conducting training.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments and jobs.  Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following kinds of duties:
 

  • Provides assistance to students and other users in one-on-one and small group environments. Assists with setup and use of microcomputers by students with various physical and learning disabilities.  Interprets software and hardware documentation. 
  • Answers student questions regarding individual lessons and class assignments.    Monitors acceptable student behavior in the laboratory. 
  • Installs, configures, and troubleshoots microcomputer workstations, and peripheral equipment, integrating into existing network environments and ensuring continuous operation of equipment, and software. 
  • Inspects laboratory computers for necessary repairs and maintenance, making repairs or arrangements for servicing on warranty and more complex issues. 
  • Monitors one or more local-area networks for dedicated groups (e.g., a student lab), adding workstations as necessary to meet computer laboratory needs. 
  • Prepares and explains handouts and materials for procedures, policies, and schedules in the lab including those for internet usage. 
  • Establishes and maintains student user accounts and profiles based on established user account policies.  Facilitates access controls to systems, files, and folders by implementing privileges and permissions according to District standards. 
  • Participates with installation and maintenance of various applications software.  May maintain and update software licenses. 
  • Analyzes network problems and makes corrective measures, referring complex occurrences to higher level technical support. Corrects connectivity failures. 
  • Installs and configures workstations to laboratory networks. Connects laboratory workstations to servers and assists others to connect with campus-wide networks. 
  • Configures software to communicate with peripherals such as printers, modems, scanners, and screens. 
  • Maintains records of student attendance in labs.  Initiates order requests for computer and instructional supplies as authorized. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications
 
Knowledge and Skills:
The position requires working technical knowledge of personal computer workstations, including the relationship and usage of various input and output components, business and education support software, and terminology.  Must understand the protocols and procedures for setting up new equipment, troubleshooting and performing routine maintenance.  Requires a basic understanding of personal computer based local area networks, network operations, and connectivity between workstations.  Requires a basic understanding of the following protocols such as TCP/IP, IGRP, Serial, and Ethernet. Requires sufficient human relation skills to conduct one-on-one instruction support and technical assistance and give demonstrations on the use and application of common desktop applications used for administrative and education purposes.  Requires sufficient writing skill to document technical procedures.  Requires sufficient math skills to compute sums, averages, products, and quotients.
 
Abilities:
Requires the ability to set up, install, configure, and maintain microcomputer workstations and peripheral equipment.  Requires the ability to perform basic diagnosis and troubleshooting of microcomputer hardware and software, including operating systems and instructional software packages/applications. Requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively.  Requires the ability to provide ongoing user support, interpret technical manuals, train end users.  Requires the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with, and deliver one-on-one instruction/tutoring to students and staff members. Requires the ability to organize and maintain accurate records.  Requires the ability to organize and conduct demonstrations and training.  Requires the ability to relate to diverse abilities and backgrounds of students.  

Education and Experience:
The position requires an Associates degree in computer science or related technical field and 1 year of experience (which may be concurrent) personal computer technical support or instruction support. 
 
Licenses and Certificates:
May require a valid driver license.

Physical Abilities:
Requires the ability to accomplish work of a sedentary to moderately active nature. Requires ambulatory ability to move to various office and classroom-type locations and to bend, stoop, crawl and reach to install cables and equipment.  Requires sufficient hand eye coordination and dexterity to make small component connections.  Requires sufficient visual acuity to read technical documents and instructions and align small components.  Requires sufficient auditory ability to carry on routine conversations.   Requires the ability to lift, push, and pull objects of medium weight (less than 50 lbs.) on an occasional basis.  Requires the ability to work in confined areas with noise variations, dust, and limited ventilation.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors where some nominal safety considerations exist from occasional physical labor and handling of medium weight, yet, awkward materials.

Conditions of Employment

This is a regular, full-time, 10-months per year classified position @ 70% (28 hours per week). The normal hours of work will be arranged between 8:00 am to 10:30 pm, Monday through Sunday, depending on the needs of the department throughout the semesters.  A 3% shift differential will be added to the posted salary for fluctuating shift.  The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
