Summary
Provides services that enhance disabled students' access to and participation in academic and student life activities. Provides and/or arranges for mobility, access, note taking, tutoring, and testing support services.
 
Distinguishing Career Features
The Disability Services Associate is in a career ladder designed for program support to students with disabilities.   Advancement to Adaptive Media Specialist would be based on need, require compliance with the job qualifications including three years as an Associate, the ability to perform the essential functions of the position, and demonstrate an ability to assess disabilities, perform substantive instructional support, use of assisted devices, and advocacy.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following kinds of duties:
  • Provides for, and/or coordinates accommodations that enhance access to curriculum, services, and facilities for students with disabilities.
  • Facilitates testing accommodations for disabled students by scheduling and proctoring tests, preparing or arranging for modifications of testing instruments to enhance students' ability to complete tests.
  • Proctors a variety of standardized tests used for pre-qualifying students as well as quizzes and exams requiring following instructor directions and requirements, allowing for accommodation/modification, and maintaining proper security and privacy.
  • Serves as, or arranges for note-takers, readers, and other services to assist disabled students in classrooms, laboratories, and other learning environments. Assists with recruiting of note-takers.
  • Documents activities of the office including, but not limited to, calls, attendance, scheduling appointments, walk-in visits, tests, tutoring, and counseling.
  • Compiles summaries and statistics on reasonable accommodations provided to students. Prepares charts and illustrations describing level, types, patterns, and trends of activity.
  • Provides information to, and assists students with on-and-off campus registration. Arranges for accommodations that enable and encourage disabled students to participate in curricular, co-curricular, and social activities that relate to the student's enrollment and are part of student life.
  • Serves as a resource for disabled students to make connections for resources and services that can help enhance self-confidence and contribute to student engagement.
  • Assists students in obtaining academic and/or personal counseling as well as tutoring. Tutors (or arranges for) disabled students individually and/or in small groups in class or lab environments to develop skills in reading, writing, grammar, speaking, mathematics, and vocational areas.
  • Provides assistance in the use of equipment and materials needed for instruction as well as orienting students to the laboratory. Sets up established laboratory and/or alternative learning experiences for students as required by course outline, faculty direction, or Student Education Plan.
  • Prepares and/or modifies from instructor's copy, exams and homework that accommodate disabled students, using specialized computer-aided software.
  • May conduct research of availability and cost of equipment and materials that could enhance student access, accommodation, and productivity. Prepares orders with proper approvals and procedures.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of trends in the field as well as legislation affecting the nature and scope of services provided.
  • Attends community presentations and meetings to give information about the program and the College's capabilities to prospective students.
  • Provides research and input to the budget development process and monitors approved expense budgets.
  • Prepares periodic reports in compliance with College and funding authority requirements on program activity.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of students, temporary help, and volunteers that provide accommodation, tutoring, and support to disabled students.
  • May provide oversight and work direction to hourly and student workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge and Skills:
The position requires working knowledge of programs, resources, regulations, and laws encompassing disabled students. Requires basic knowledge of and skill at recognizing the various forms of disabilities and potential accommodations. Requires knowledge of alternative teaching and learning methods and media for disabled students. Requires working knowledge of personal computers and common office productivity software.
Requires sufficient language and math skills to do basic pre-college tutoring. Requires sufficient writing skills to prepare correspondence and reports. Requires business math skills sufficient to compute totals, percent's, quotients, products, and ratios. Requires sufficient human relations skill to convey technical concepts to students, exercise extreme patience, make contact with outside agencies and employers, and promote the services.
 
Abilities:
Requires the ability to carry out all aspects of the position.   Requires the ability to learn and apply regulations governing access and accommodation such as but not limited to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and Title V. Must be able to maintain the learning or simulation lab and equipment in a safe and organized manner. Requires the ability to instruct students in the use of learning assistance equipment and programs. Requires the ability to perform routine record keeping and report writing duties. Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality of records and files. Requires the ability to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively. Requires the ability to communicate in both formal and informal setting with students, instructors, and other interested parties. Requires the ability to demonstrate sensitivity to persons with disabilities and varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Requires the ability to coordinate the activities of work-study students, temporary employees, and volunteers. May require the ability to perform work assignments at all College locations.
 
Education and Experience:
The position typically requires an Associate's degree in a social or behavioral science, ancillary health profession, or equivalent discipline that enables job performance and one year of concurrent experience working with special needs students and alternative learning technologies. Additional direct experience may substitute for some higher education. Or, any combination of education and experience that would meet the required qualifications.
 
Physical Abilities:

The incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office or class/lab environment, engaged in work of a moderately active nature. Requires ambulatory ability to move to various office and classroom-type locations. Requires sufficient hand-eye-arm coordination to use a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires sufficient visual acuity to read documents and instructions. Requires sufficient auditory ability to carry on routine conversations with normal and hearing impaired persons. Requires the ability to lift, push, and pull objects of medium weight (less than 50 lbs.) on an occasional basis.
 
Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors where some safety considerations exist working with students having mobility challenges.

Conditions of Employment

This is a categorically funded, regular, temporary, full-time, 12-month per year position.  The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.   

  • Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

Time to Refuel
Vacation
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.

Sick Leave
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.

Holidays
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.

Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.

Great Expectations
Pension Plans
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan  is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.

Annuities
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
