DEFINITION:
This part-time hourly technical assistance position reports to the Dean, Technology and will provide support to the Orange Coast College Makerspace students and faculty.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 

  1. Supports engagement with campus community (students/clubs and faculty) and regional community stakeholders to promote and increase use of the Makerspace through activities/events, production of social media and other outreach materials
  2. Assists with the supervision of makers in the Makerspace during regular, consistently scheduled "open" hours of the Makerspace, NTE 28 hours per week.
  3. Schedules and oversees activities of student workers in the Makerspace during the scheduled "open" hours of the Makerspace
  4. Collaborates with faculty and administration to develop safety protocols and training/testing procedures for makers in the Makerspace.
  5. Provides testing, documentation and monitors maintenance, and usage of equipment within the Makerspace
  6. Assists with developing, implementing and tracking of skills-based badging system for students/makers in the Makerspace
  7. Collaborates with faculty supervisor in quarterly report writing, including summaries and highlights of activities in and associated with the Makerspace

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  1. Rhino 3D, Fusion 360, and Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  2. Modern Makerspace equipment & workflow practices.
  3. Record keeping, reporting, and presentation techniques.
  4. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  5. Oral and written communication skills, including social media.
  6. Telephone, email, and social media techniques and etiquette.
  7. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Ability to:
  1. Provide supervision and hands-on support for a Makerspace and division.
  2. Maintain records and files for quarterly and year-end reporting.
  3. Assemble, organize and prepare data for records, reports, and presentations.
  4. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including social media.
  5. Operate Makerspace equipment using a computer and related equipment for safe and detailed Makerspace operations.
  6. Work at an acceptable speed, both nimbly and efficiently.
  7. Plan and organize work to meet deadlines of the Makerspace  work plan.
  8. Complete work with frequent interruptions.
  9. Understand and work within the scope of authority.
  10. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) - maintaining secure records with discretion and in compliance with FERPA.

Education and Experience:
  1. Completion of at least two-years college level coursework related to design, architecture, engineering, art making, and/or maker culture.
  2. One-year of experience in a supervisory and/or support role for a Makerspace, fabrication shop, or related hands-on experience, reporting to an administrator.
  3. Or, any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications.

Physical Demands:
Must be able to function effectively indoors in a classroom, laboratory or office environment engaged in work of a moderately active nature. Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand for extended periods of time, life and move medium weight materials up to 25 pounds, and move to work stations. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity to use a computer keyboard and other office and peripheral equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings. Requires the visual acuity to read printed materials and labels and to observe students perform tests and assignments.
 
Working Conditions
Work is performed under typical classroom, laboratory, or office conditions and the noise level is usually high.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part time temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked and are limited to 28 hours per week.

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as needed basis. We accept applications all year long. Departments or Divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file, as needed, to fill temporary assignments. (Applicants will remain in the POOL for one year.)
