Departmental Overview

Founded in 1973, the Student Learning Center (SLC) is the primary academic support unit on campus, serving over 12,000 students annually in nine academic programs. Consistently ranked among the top three resources students find most helpful to their academic transition and success, the SLC supports students in cultivating the disposition, habits, and learning strategies necessary to navigate the rigor of Cal. Through service formats that honor their diverse starting points, we aim to empower all students to realize their full academic potential and aspirations.

The Student Learning Center belongs to the Division of Undergraduate Education.

This is a 100% contract position for the academic years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.


The SLC Mathematics and Statistics Coordinator assists the Co-Directors in the administration of the Mathematics and Statistics Program, from managing the daily operations of the program to teaching undergraduate Math/Stat Adjunct courses.

Specifically, the incumbent:
  • Assists with the training and supervision of staff of 50-80 undergraduate and graduate tutors.
  • Delivers established academic support program in mathematics & statistics.
  • Teaches introductory mathematics and statistics adjunct courses (50%), which may include Mathematics 1, 10, 16, 32, 53, 54, or 55; Statistics 2, 134.
  • Meets individually with students and holds office hours; helps students navigate critical transition stages, including high school or community college to first year research University undergraduate course work.
  • Mentors students in pursuit of academic interests and goals; administers established assessment instruments to assess students' academic preparation and progress as well as to enhance course and teaching effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with fellow staff to support center-wide initiatives and daily operations
  • Collaborates with designated faculty and/or Math/Stat program Director to implement established curriculum.
  • Maintains knowledge of campus partners and refers students appropriately.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics or statistics or equivalent experience.
  • Experience teaching college level mathematics and statistics courses.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that facilitate communication across a broad range of people.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills. Keen political acumen.
  • Developed multicultural competencies: knowledge and experience working with diverse groups of students, staff, and faculty.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of theory, research, and pedagogy in areas of teaching, learning, and academic support, including methodologies to enhance student success.
  • Intermediate knowledge of K-18 contexts as they pertain to the needs of incoming student populations.
  • Knowledge of multiple learning styles, affective, socio-cultural and linguistic issues as they apply to academic support.
  • Knowledge of academic and curricular issues as they apply to providing academic support.
  • Experience implementing learning strategies.
  • Knowledge of relevant campus, state, and federal policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Intermediate to advanced digital literacy

Salary & Benefits

The hourly salary range of the position is $21.70 - $33.09, commensurate with experience.
