The Facilities Department at the University at Buffalo invites applicants for our Trades Specialist Welder position. This position will be reporting to the Mechanical Equipment Shop. The incumbent must possess a knowledge of welding work, a variety of metals and alloys, using arc and gas welding equipment and building systems. Candidate must demonstrate proficiency in the safe use of hand and power tools.
Incumbent will be responsible for completing the tasks listed below at a journey-level competency as a Welder in Facilities Campus Operations:Perform MIG , TIG , stick, and oxy-acytelene welding on a variety of metals.
Fabricate, modify, and repair metal structures, equipment and fixtures.
Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine project requirements.
Planning, layout, installing and constructing frameworks, including hangers, mechanical skids, piping systems and structures.
Measure, cut, and construct structures. Operate shop tools, welding machines, grinders, and cutting equipment.
Assist with project planning, material selection, and cost estimation.
Properly using equipment, material and tools in a safe and professional manner.
Being proficient in the application of building codes.
Support other trades and departments as needed on maintenance and construction projects.

Minimum Qualifications
Four years of full -time experience in welding work under a skilled trades person which could provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in welding at a school, institute, or branch of Armed services; OR successful completion of a NYS two-year Carpenter Traineeship or NYS two-year welding training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent welding two-year training or apprenticeship program;* OR four (4) years of full-time experience in welding. * Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program included a total of 288 hours of trade specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint /schematic reading coursework. Coursework must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training
Preferred Qualifications
A valid NYS Drivers license; or otherwise be able to demonstrate that the transportation requirements of the job can be met.
Lock-out/Tag-out training
Experience with a variety of welding machines and tools to perform the work, including power saws, cranes and drills.
Being comfortable using machinery and tools to safely complete duties.
Ability to work with multiple types of tools.
Detect and identify written procedures.
Physical Demands
Candidate will be working near electrical equipment, gas-fired equipment, pressure vessels, and other equipment and in conditions that could potentially be hazardous if industry best-practices and safety procedures are not followed. The successful candidate is required to have confidence in their own abilities, and be able to work safely and proficiently on this equipment and in this environment, at any time of day or day or week.
Bending, twisting, ability to lift 50 pounds, climb ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces. Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required. Work in loud/noisy dusty/dirty environments. Candidate must be able to stand, walk, lift, carry, reach, push and pulling of material and equipment and must be able to perform the physical demands of the position as outlined in the Position Summary.
