Departmental Overview The Hurley laboratory is interested in fundamental questions of how the interactions between proteins and membranes determine cell and organelle shape, how these processes contribute to quality control and homeostasis, how protein-membrane interactions turn on and off the signals that control essential cell processes, and how these processes go wrong in disease. The lab carries out basic structural cell biology research that is driven primarily by cryo-EM and cryo_ET imaging, and also engages in targeted drug discovery driven by biochemical and cell-based assays and facilitated by structural approaches. This position will support all of the laboratory's basic research and drug discovery efforts. Responsibilities OVERVIEW: The incumbent will also serve as a point of contact to various research support offices on campus (e.g. EHS, Stanley Hall building management) and to outside laboratories that request reagents. The incumbent's responsibilities will also be extended to include research activities, with the level of independence of these contributions to be determined by time and interest, and at the discretion of the PI.
Monitor and order supplies of common chemicals and biochemicals, consumables, and EHS disposal containers as needed. Track, pick-up, and distribute packages as they are received
Serve as a general lab safety officer. Monitor all lab spaces to ensure tidiness and EHS compliance, organize semi-annual lab cleaning and annual chemical inventory, maintain chemical inventory. Work with lab members to prepare, maintain, and update lab SOPs.
Manage equipment service contracts and solicit quotes for new purchases, coordinate repairs and routine equipment maintenance Manage lab computers and servers and update software as needed.
Ensure data management protocols are followed, including monthly review of each lab member's documentation
Orient new lab members to lab policies and procedures, university safety requirements, chemical and biological safety. Manage lab checkout for graduating/leaving members, ensuring that all samples are either disposed of or logged/stored appropriately before people leave the lab
Schedule weekly laboratory meetings and journal clubs
Update lab website and manage online accounts on Slack and Twitter
Provide routine research support to laboratory members in the fields of protein purification and characterization, general biochemical and molecular biological techniques, and cell culture.
Conduct research (level of independence determined at PI's discretion)
Required Qualifications
Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff verbally and in writing.
Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Working knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet daily deadlines in a fast-paced laboratory setting.
Experience with general laboratory techniques.
Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
Organized, responsible, with close attention to detail.
Ability to keep and maintain good laboratory records.
Preferred Qualifications
3+ years of lab experience and/or equivalent experience/training.
Familiarity with experimental methods in protein purification and characterization.
Experience with general biochemical and molecular biological techniques.
Experience with concepts of mammalian cell biology and subcellular organelles.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $60,245.54 (step 1) - $96,914.75 (step 25)
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
This position is exempt and paid monthly.
