    Departmental Overview

    The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) serves the University of California as one of the preeminent space research units in the country. Its projects, programs and 300+ scientists and staff are funded by $300+ million of primarily Federal contracts and grants. To support the broad range of research activities, the Lab utilizes a rich set of information technology resources cross three buildings, including: the UCB/SSL Mission Operations Center (UCB-MOS) connected directly to the NASA network; the Berkeley Ground Station (BGS) for sending and receiving satellite telemetry, complete with an onsite 11-meter satellite dish; a server collocation facility containing most of the Lab's science computational servers and data storage with 200 terabytes of online capacity; an enterprise-level data backup service with secure, offsite tape storage; a combination of more than 700 Linux, Windows and Macintosh servers, workstations and laptops; and a private wireless and wired network interconnecting all these resources, as well as connecting the Lab to Campus and the world.

    Position Summary

    Under the direction of the SSL IT Director, this position works personally with the Researchers and the UCB Mission Operations System (UCB-MOS) to develop and manage departmental computing assets, providing the necessary computing infrastructure support for all research projects and space satellite operations. This position provides direct and indirect Linux systems administration, application programming, IT security, and Cloud infrastructure support to the department's faculty, staff, students, research projects, and the UCB-MOS.

    Responsibilities



    • Linux Systems Administrator

    • Shared responsibility for the installation, configuration, security and maintenance of our UNIX systems.

    • Troubleshoot server hardware and software errors.

    • Install new system hardware.

    • Respond to user support requests.

    • Monitor the server performance and network security.

    • Writes and maintains systems documentation.

    • Application programming, security and maintenance

    • Debug existing science research software with limited comments or documentation.

    • Develop and debugging security patches for such programs.

    • Assist scientists and staff creating new web, cloud or client science programs.

    • Writes and maintains systems documentation.

    • VMware Vsphere cluster administration

    • Enterprise network and firewall administration, including security monitoring



    Required Qualifications



    • Must be able to communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner with staff of varying levels of technical expertise, both orally and written.

    • At least 5 years Red Hat Enterprise Linux system administration experience, including demonstrated experience deploying and troubleshooting TCP/IP, NFS, SMB, DNS/DHCP, Apache HTTP and other network services.

    • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience with server-based security software.

    • Demonstrated experience with programming Java, C, or C++; Perl, Python and PHP; awk/gawk and Linux shell scripting; and MySQL/MariaDB. Must have experience building and debugging websites with HTML and JavaScript.

    Education / Training Requirements

    Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

    Preferred Qualifications



    • Experience with cloud computing and storage infrastructure.

    • Experience installing and maintaining VMware Vsphere.

    • Experience installing and maintaining Juniper and Cisco enterprise network and security hardware.

    • Windows and Macintosh system administration experience.

    • Experience programming with IDL.



    Salary & Benefits

    This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The full range for this position is $85,800.00-$158,200.00 The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,800.00-$122,000.00.
