    Departmental Overview

    The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliated community members. In addition to the 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state of the art equipment.

    Position Summary

    Group Fitness Instructor provides instruction in non-credited recreational or sports activities to participants of all ages. Applies full knowledge and experience in recreational sports activities to create and adjust program methods and processes and provides safe instruction to participants. We are seeking warm, outgoing, engaging, diverse team members who thrive in a community environment and are committed to guiding group fitness classes that are empowering, energizing, and FUN.

    This is an ongoing hiring process with numerous positions available. Applications will be regularly assessed, and hiring will occur at various points throughout the year. The job listing will remain open for as long as applications are accepted.

    Responsibilities



    • Provides Group Fitness activity instruction to program participants, individually or in groups.

    • Maintains a supportive environment for Group Fitness program participants and facilitates involvement.

    • Interacts with Group Fitness program participants in a positive manner.

    • Broadens knowledge of Group Fitness teaching methods, techniques and skills through continuing education.

    • Participates in required professional training and development activities.

    • May work in Group Fitness camps, fitness camps , and outdoor programs.

    • Leads in Group Fitness activity instruction to program participants, individually or in groups.

    • Arrives to Group Fitness class on time and prepared to teach.

    • Assure all equipment is stored correctly after Group Fitness class.

    • Communicate equipment problems and concerns to Fitness Program Supervisor.

    • Attend all Group Fitness Staff meetings.

    • Clock in and out through Caltime.



    Required Qualifications



    • Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures.

    • Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, critical thinking, multi-tasking, time management skills, and dynamic flexibility in adapting to the needs of clients.

    • Ability to exercise independent sound judgement and employ reasoning skills.

    • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.

    • Basic skills in computer programs relevant to job duties.

    • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.


    Education:



    • High school diploma and / or equivalent certification / experience / training


    Licenses/Certifications:



    • Must maintain valid California Driver's License and clean DMV record

    • Nationally Recognized Group Fitness Certification (ACE, AFFA)


    Preferred Qualifications



    • CPR / AED Certification



    Salary & Benefits

    This is a 10% FTE, part-time (4 hours/week), contract appointment, and is not eligible for UC benefits. This is a non-exempt, hourly paid position.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $18.67 - $60.00.
