    Position Summary


    The Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo is seeking an Electronics Technical Associate. In this role you will be responsible for performing diagnostic assessment and repairs on the electrical system of scientific instrumentation whihc is used for instruction and research in the department and, as requested by other instructional or research units, in the university.

    Principal responsibilities/duties include:



      • Performing diagnostic assessments and repairs on a broad array of electrical instrumentation utilized in the chemistry teaching and research programs [e.g., spectrometers, chromatographic and mass spectrometric systems (NMR, LC-MS, GC-MS, ESCASIMS, FT-MS, ICP-MS, etc.), pH meters, UV-Vis and IR spectrophotometers, balances, heat blocks, and various other laboratory equipment].

      • Diagnose RF, high voltage, analog, and digital circuit failures as it pertains to available instrumentation, utilizing standard testing equipment such as voltmeters and oscilloscopes, and perform repairs.

      • Perform computer/hardware interfacing as required, meeting specifications of instrumentation and manufacturer software.

      • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform upgrades and repairs of instrumentation as required, including the ability to diagnose/replace soldered on-board components.

      • As needed, contribute to the design and fabrication of new specialized equipment based upon the specifications and needs of the user (i.e., graduate students, faculty, and staff), including the ability to do simple board layouts and fabrication of test circuits.

      • Ensure effective and efficient Electronic Shop service. This includes managing work orders, keeping records, scheduling jobs, updating customers on their job’s status, promptly charging for work, maintaining test equipment, maintaining an inventory of commonly used tools/parts, and maintaining a library of relevant information (such as repair manuals, catalogs, and technical data).

      • Serve as liaison between the department and other service departments within and outside of the college and provide the repair of electronic equipment to other university units, as needed.

      • Supervise, when required, student workers or interns.

      • Serve as the subject matter expert for researchers regarding electrical circuity and safety.

      • These duties will require the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose on-board components, perform replacement of soldered on-board components, and the ability to utilize diagnostic equipment (such as volt meters and oscilloscopes).

    Minimum Qualifications



    • A minimum of an associates degree with 2 years of experience, a combination of degree, certification and experience will be considered in lieu of the degree requirements.


    Preferred Qualifications



    • Bachelors degree in a science-related field or engineering preferred

    • At least one year of relevant experience.
