    Position Summary


    The State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) is currently seeking an Infrastructure Engineer who is an inside/outside plant cabling professional to plan and coordinate activities to ensure effective and efficient installation and maintenance of network-wide data cabling as well as a secure and reliable environment for the operation of network equipment. To this end, they will support the delivery of construction services as well as outside contracted work in compliance with safety and industry standards, government regulations, and established procedures.

    Duties and responsibilities include:



      • Contributes to the development of Division-27 standards for low-voltage cabling systems.

      • Reviews all aspects of the structured cable plant. Contributes to standards for relevant documentation and labeling. Conduct site surveys and document existing conditions of infrastructure and systems providing any recommended improvements.

      • Reviews and is familiar with cabling and network equipment requirements for new building and renovations of existing buildings.

      • Reviews plans for projects, schedules, attends all appropriate meetings, and reviews all work for adherence to standards.

      • Use web-based Project / Construction Management application for correspondence and documentation. Currently BlueBeam.

      • Develops bill of materials for construction projects.

      • Contributes to innovative solutions essential in meeting constituents design requirements and project due dates.

      • Ensures that equipment is ordered in a timely manner for installation.

      • Monitors performance of contractors to ensure work is completed in a timely manner and to project standards.

      • In consultation with fellow engineers and project managers, plans and coordinates installation of low voltage wiring and fiber optic cabling.

      • Reviews installation of hardware, cable test results and all low voltage work.

      • Ensures all documentation is submitted.

      • Completes review of punch list to ensure adherence to university design criteria.

      • Works, both hands-on and by providing guidance to network engineers, to ensure cabling projects throughout all locations are done in accordance with industry and university best practices.

      • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications



    • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of experience in cabling projects design and implementation, including diagnostic metrics and best practices training involving data center, IT, A/V and other structured cabling OR master’s degree with 1 year of experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

    • Working knowledge of structured cabling standards and best practices such as EIA/TIABICSI, etc.

    • This position requires local travel between each university campus and off-campus. Must have the ability to demonstrate that the candidate can meet the transportation needs of this position.

    • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without visa sponsorship.


    Preferred Qualifications



    • BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD).

    • Familiarity with network topologies, and IP network protocols.

    • Knowledge of Datacenter cabling, cooling, and power systems.


    Physical Demands



    • Occasionally ascends or descends a ladder, use standard telecommunications tools/ equipment, and differentiate colors used for standard wire coding. Must be able to lift and move network hardware weighing up to (50lbs or 75lbs).

    • Must be able to move safely through construction sites wearing provided and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
