    Departmental Overview

    Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the University community to ensure that classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. Through the efforts of over 400 dedicated staff members and serving over 10M building square feet and 1100 acres, Facilities Services includes the asset management program, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, the Cal Zero Waste program.

    Position Summary

    The primary responsibilities of the Custodial Service Organization are to maintain the campus buildings at a clean and sanitary level. The campus operations staff members report directly to the Custodial. Supervisors and Managers The position is responsible for maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of specific areas using approved products, methods and frequencies, which have been approved by the Custodial Supervisor and Manager.

    Responsibilities

    Operate, maintain, set up and dismantle a full range of cleaning equipment. This includes but is not limited to the following items: vacuum cleaners, buffers, pressure washing equipment, wet/dry vacuums, floor scrubbing and/or polishing machines.

    In offices, lounges, student common areas, lobbies, laboratories, hallways, stairwells, walkways, outside steps, terraces, balconies, trash, kitchenettes, and other designated areas:



    • Operate various types of equipment used for floor care maintenance such as automatic scrubbers, wet/dry vacuums, carpet extractors, and burnishes.

    • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets as needed.

    • Use electrically powered scrubbing and polishing machines to burnish, scrub, polish and spray clean floors.

    • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.

    • Use pressure washers and air blowers to maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior spaces up to 20 feet of the entrance of a building.

    • Carpet and Upholstery cleaning.

    • Perform deep cleaning, disinfecting and scrubbing of surfaces and areas that are hosts of potentially dangerous germs and viruses.

    • Diamond polish different type of flooring types ranging from, but not limited to, terrazzo floor to concrete.

    • Clean windows and high dust using lift and ladders above six feet.

    • Vacuum, sweep, shampoo, and spot-clean rugs, carpet and other materials.

    • Work on a Preventative Maintenance (PM) schedule for floor care and carpet develop by Supervisor.

    • Refurbish and apply sealer to floor tile and grout in restrooms and lobbies.

    • Perform all duties as described in the Custodian and Senior Custodian job description.

    • Possess knowledge and ability to apply appropriate cleaning methods, including specialized procedures and techniques for medical grade disinfecting.

    • Operate a Genie Lift.

    • Deliver supplies and operate forklift.



    Set-ups:



    • Move and set up folding/stationary tables weighing up to 40 lbs.; arrange chairs and other furniture; clean rooms; follow checklist for set-up arrangements and amenities to be provided on the tables. Clean chalk/white boards and rails.



    Customer Service



    • Provide quality customer service during each interaction with internal and external customers.

    • Adhere to all university and departmental safety guidelines.

    • Attend job-related and safety training as required.

    • Work in a safe and responsible manner while not putting self or others at risk. This includes complying with applicable policies and regulations; using personal safety gear; observing warning signs; learning about potential hazards; and reporting unsafe conditions.



    Securing & Other Duties



    • Secure areas as required, such as entrance and office doors; and possess building master or sub-master key, access to office buildings and certain facilities.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.



    Required Qualifications



    • Knowledge of cleaning products and methods used to maintain different types of floor surfaces (tile, wood, cement, carpet).

    • Knowledge of healthy and safe work practices, personal protective equipment (PPEs), and SDS sheets.

    • Ability to lift up to 50 lb. and move up to 100 lbs.

    • Ability to earn forklift certification.

    • Ability to learn to operate Genie Lift.

    • Ability to learn and practice security procedures related to unlocking/locking/securing of buildings and keys.

    • Basic English skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking), including ability to read documents, SDS and warning labels in English.

    • Ability to comprehend technical and safety documentation and follow oral and written instructions related to the use of position-related equipment, tools, and the safe use of chemicals.

    • Ability to communicate clearly and convey information effectively in person, radio, etc.

    • Ability to gain basic understanding/knowledge of University environment, mission, and operational needs.

    • Ability to work with minimum of supervision in isolated areas, or in a building with heavy customer traffic.

    • Basic skill to evaluate, trouble-shoot inquiries, establish priorities, follow plans and complete goals/objectives.

    • Ability to maintain respectful, civil, professional, and customer-friendly behavior.

    • Excellent customer service skills, which include ability to take customer requests in customer-friendly manner and follow through.

    • Ability to work within a team environment.

    • Must be able to walk/stand for a majority of the shift, climb stairs, and have the physical strength and dexterity to perform custodial tasks.

    • Personal Protective Equipment must be worn as required by the specific assignment.

    • Ability to wear tieback suit to perform work in areas that are considered hazardous.



    Preferred Qualifications



    • Experience in facilities operations, preferably in a college/university, hotel, hospital or property management.



    Salary & Benefits

    This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $21.88 (Step 1) - $28.88 (Step 15).
