    Applications are currently being accepted for Instructional Lab Technician: Physics/Astronomy in the School of Math & Science, located at San Diego Mesa College. This is a 100% assignment (40 hours per week) for 12 months of each fiscal year. The selected candidate must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department's needs.

    Under the direction of the department chairperson and dean, the Instructional Laboratory Technician (ILT) performs a variety of technical and specialized duties related to the preparation, operation and maintenance of physics and astronomy academic classroom laboratories and related areas; and assists faculty in the use and maintenance of observatory equipment.

    Major factors to be evaluated for this position include:



    • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: satisfactory completion of core courses for an AS in physics and at least two years of successful work experience in the field of physics or a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science. Experience in an instructional setting is desirable.

    • Technical skills, including programming, in the disciplines of astronomy, physics, and engineering.

    • Knowledge and ability in maintaining, troubleshooting, calibrating, building, and repairing technical/scientific equipment and instruments, including astronomy observatory equipment.

    • Demonstrated teamwork and interpersonal skills.

    • Excellent planning, organizational, and record keeping skills.

    • Initiative and creative problem-solving skills.

    • Experience maintaining inventory such as ordering and receiving equipment and supplies.

    • Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
