    Departmental Overview

    UC Berkeley's Department of Art Practice provides rigorous practical, conceptual, and critical studio art training within a world-renowned public research university. Students develop a cross-media understanding of studio art practices in a global context and gain valuable experience for a wide range of professional lives within contemporary art and culture. 2D, 3D, and time-based studio production courses, research seminars, and professional development courses provide essential skills within conceptual and critical frameworks. We offer a four-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and a two year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. Our courses service approximately 500 undergraduate students, and 12 graduate students across a diverse range of disciplines. Located in the vibrant California Bay Area, our program is deeply connected to the region's complex historical legacies and is engaged in its creative possibilities. Our award-winning faculty consists of internationally acclaimed artists working across a range of media, and with multiple research interests that closely link the Art Practice Department with other university departments and research centers.

    Responsibilities

    Technical Assistance: Instruct graduate and undergraduate students, staff, and faculty in the materials, methods, sources, and services available to the contemporary sculptor. Assist students in the integration of their sculptural concepts with up-to-date techniques. Provide students with information to research and utilize services and methods of working independently. Design and fabricate parts or mechanisms with students for their research requirements.

    Shop Activities: Establish and maintain appropriate shop procedures, training documents, Sculpture area budgets, and course fees. Articulate, disseminate, and enforce EH&S shop safety regulations and policies. Maintain the physical security of the premises and equipment. Evaluate the technical capabilities of graduate and undergraduate students using the facilities. Monitor and train shop personnel. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the shop equipment; replace and upgrade equipment, work with vendors as repair needs arise. Maintain the Tool Lending System.

    Purchase shop and classroom inventory.

    Instructional Support: Prepare and conduct lectures and demonstrations for classes using the Wood, Metal, and Digital Technologies within the Sculpture shops. Articulate fabrication techniques to graduates, undergraduates, staff and faculty. Demonstrate the appropriate and safe use of shop equipment and Environmental Health and Safety protocol. Possess a comprehensive knowledge of the uses and characteristics of a myriad of materials, with wood and metal being the focus. Direct student sculptural concepts and motivate an aptitude that enhances methods of creation.

    Other Duties: Maintain and train students, staff, and faculty to use the digital technologies within the shops.

    Train and oversee graduate students at the Richmond Field Station regarding their Studio Contract responsibilities, and appropriate use and disposal of chemicals/toxic waste. Inspect studio and common areas and communicate any out-of-compliance issues. Support and maintain the various student installations and gallery spaces.
    Required Qualifications



    • A comprehensive knowledge of woodworking tools and techniques. Must be able to demonstrate the appropriate safe use of shop equipment and Environmental Health and Safety protocol

    • Should be knowledgable of metal fabrication techniques using TIG, MIG, oxyacetylene, plasma cutting, spot welding, sheet metal, rod and plate joinery methods with an emphasis on mild steel. The fabrication characteristics of using aluminum, copper, brass and stainless steel should be known and understood.

    • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma

    • Teaching Experience

    • Background in art

    • Six years experience and journeyman skill in the operation of all standard machine shop equipment

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $37.89 (step 1) - $45.70 (step 5).
