    Departmental Overview

    The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliated community members. In addition to the 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state-of-the-art equipment.

    Responsibilities

    Involves providing Sport Club athletes with sideline coverage, injury prevention training, and evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. This position serves as the Athletic Trainer for the Sport Club program within the Department of Recreational Sports. Under the direction of a University Health Services physician and Office of Competitive Sports, this position is responsible for injury prevention, evaluation, management, treatment and rehabilitation of 30 sport club teams.

    Key Responsibilities



    • Applies professional concepts to deliver comprehensive, individualized and effective training to optimize athletic performance, prevent injuries during practices and competitions and provide rehabilitation for chronic and acute injuries and conditions. Utilizes treatment plans incorporating full range of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques. May travel with club teams, as needed.

    • Screens and refers injured athletes to other medical services, including but not limited to University Health Services or other members of campus multidisciplinary treatment team and other campus programs for student health & wellbeing.

    • Administers first-aid to athletes and coordinates athletic training services for all Sport Club events, tournaments, which may include evening and weekend hours. Provides manual therapy applicable to orthopedic and sports medicine.

    • Provide seasonal support as summer camp medic to summer youth programs when Sport Club season is in off-season. Provide care for youth aged 4-17 and document incidents in Connect 2.

    • Provides athletes / patients with moderate to complex rehabilitation of athletic injuries through the use of various therapeutic exercise programs. Provides manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.

    • Maintains athletic training facilities and equipment. Ensures all athletic equipment is fully operational and athletic training rooms are maintained according to standards.

    • Review injury reports and reports injuries, completing appropriate documentation, and maintenance of medical charts. Maintain current records and files on all medical aspects of the Sport Club Program.

    • Maintains discretion and confidentiality in all matters involving athlete / patient injury and treatment. Update coaches/staff regularly on the status of injured athletes and the athlete's status for practice or competition.

    • Establish and enforce safety procedures. Assist with the management, training, and supervision of Sport Club Safety Officers. Instruct CPR/First Aid/AED classes.

    • Works in a collaborative manner within the team and across Office of Competitive Sports, RecWell, UHS, and campus/industry partners to organize and prioritize work assignments and develop recommendations.

    • Administer concussion management protocols and baseline testing to all high risk Sport Club athletes, program-wide concussion education and oversee post injury assessments. Uphold practice limitations and guidelines to uphold the standard of care for managing concussions and other brain injuries.

    • Conducts analysis related to programs and operational procedures and develops recommendations for training / service improvements.



    Required Qualifications



    • Thorough skills associated with athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment.

    • Strong skills necessary to communicate verbally and in writing.

    • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group.

    • Strong ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with others, including athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff and others in the department.

    • Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.

    • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments.

    • Strong ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines.

    • Thorough knowledge of electronic medical records systems.

    • Maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the UCOP Concussion Management Protocol, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.

    • Abide by OSHA, HIPPA, and FERPA guidelines.



    Education Level:



    • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.



    Licenses/Certification:



    • Professional certification required.

    • Must maintain NATABOC Certifications established by the National Athletic Trainer Association, including on-going continuing education units.

    • First Aid and CPR certification.



    Preferred Qualifications



    • Master's degree in a related field preferred.

    • First Aid and CPR Instructor. (within 3 months of hire).



    Salary & Benefits

    This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,000.00 - $90,000.00.
