    Job Description






     





    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:


     


    Lifeguards assist with swimming lessons on a part-time basis and evaluate student performance pursuant to guidelines set by the department and the College.  Lifeguards enforce rules to ensure safety of patrons and respond to emergencies and rescue swimmers in danger of drowning. Lifeguards must maintain accurate records on students and submit pertinent data to the department and/or the College.


     


    TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:



    •    Oversees activities at aquatic facility;
    •    Assists with swimming lessons;
    •    Explains and enforces rules, regulations and policies to ensure safety of patrons;
    •    Monitors designated areas to recognize signs of danger;
    •    Warns swimmers of unsafe situations;
    •    Maintains order in swimming areas;
    •    Responds to emergencies and rescues swimmers in danger of drowning;
    •    Performs first aid procedures;
    •    Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of all areas;
    •    Maintains records and reports;
    •    Required to work all swim meets;
    •    Is responsive to students and provides students with assistance and guidance;
    •    Is responsible for contributing to and maintaining an inclusive and collaborative College environment;
    •    Adheres to all College, Department as well as applicable County policies.



    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



    Good knowledge of field of specialization; experience as determined by the application of equivalencies in the individual department. Must be CPR certified with updated Lifeguard Certification; effective communication skills and able to get along well with others; experience in working with a diverse student body; shows initiative, resourcefulness and dependability; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.



    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



    Valid certification in the following:
    Advanced Lifesaving Certificate; 
    Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation; 
    First Aid (approved Red Cross course); 
    Updated Lifeguard Certification; 
    Qualify in swimming, lifesaving, and written tests administered by the Erie County Parks and 
    Recreation Department.


     


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  


                                  
    Please attach Lifeguard Certifications with your application.  All valid certifications will be required for successful candidates immediately upon hire.
