  • Dental Equipment Mechanic II - Facilities Services

    Tufts University

    Department Summary:
    The department of facilities services is responsible for the efficient and cost effective operations, maintenance and management of all tufts university facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space on three campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, and Boston). A broad range of services are provided to support the university campuses including: facility maintenance by all trades, capital maintenance, information technology systems for operations (work control, time capture, preventative maintenance), energy and utilties systems, recycling and waste management, event services,
    residential facilities coordination, grounds maintenance and facility condition assessment and tracking. Facilities services plays a critical role in planning for the $30m/year deferred maintenance investment. Related functions, which require close coordination with this department, are public and environmental health and safety, campus planning and design and construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs, renovations and new construction.

    Job Summary: Reporting to the Facilities Operations Group, the Dental Equipment Mechanic II position will be responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing various types and makes of both fixed and portable dental equipment. The majority of the work on the Campus will focus on laboratory dental specific equipment servicing and repairs with the remainder of time working on dental chairs, delivery systems and lights, often while a patient or student
    is utilizing the equipment. The University requires experienced Dental Equipment Mechanics who understand safe work practices, lab safety, and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the disposition of their work. This position is unique in that it requires a customer service aspect not found in other dental equipment mechanic positions where as mechanics are dealing directly with patients, students and staff under stressful and timesensitive situations. This position is considered essential as defined in the Tufts University Employee Handbook.

    1. Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair dental equipment such as the basic dental chair unit, hydraulic systems, lights, delivery systems and hand pieces to manufacturer specifications.
    2. Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair delivery systems, foot controls, hand pieces and associated hoses, as well as maintaining simulation work stations in student laboratories, with students present as well as before/after use. Be especially keen to the needs of lab managers and quickly address student requests for repairs.

    3. Emergent response to trouble calls in occupied dental operatories, oral surgery rooms and laboratories, with an emphasis on immediately restoring equipment operation.
    4. Inspect, clean and repair/replace cutting wheels, vacuum equipment traps and dental equipment motors on portable equipment. Service belts, brakes and pulleys wherever required in laboratories and as it relates to dental equipment.


    Basic Requirements:

    Preferably 5+ years of professional experience in the facilities maintenance industry working as a mechanic demonstrating mechanical aptitude.
    High school diploma/GED preferred.
    Some formal education in the field of dental equipment repair and a minimum of 1 years’ experience.
    Reliable transportation and clean driving record.
    Ability to complete work proactively as well as on an urgent/immediate basis.
    Excellent communication and team-building skills.
    Preferred Qualifications:

    Must have excellent oral and written communications skills.
    Must possess excellent time management skills.
    Must work well under pressure and be able to perform urgent equipment repairs.
    Must have the ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize competing requirements.
    Must be able to deal with difficult people and/or stressful scenarios.
    Must have excellent organizational skills.
    Must have strong PC and tablet skills; proficiency in MS Office.
    Must be able to work well with other technicians, tradesmen, students, lab managers, customers, faculty and staff.
    On-call and overtime hours as needed, per assigned schedule.
    Good hygiene and cleanliness is required at all times.
    Must adhere to the University’s uniform policy.
    Complete understanding of the University’s Bloodborne Pathogen policies and program.
    Follow rules and regulations as described in the University & CBA Handbook.

    Special Work Schedule Requirements:
    Tuesday – Friday ; Saturday 12:00pm - 8:30pm; (S)7:00am-3:30pm
