    Departmental Overview

    The Niyogi Lab studies photosynthetic energy conversion and its regulation in algae and plants.

    The lab's long-term research goals are to understand how photosynthesis works, how it is regulated, and how it might be improved to help meet the world's needs for food and fuel.

    The lab uses a wide array of experimental organisms (cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algae, and plants) and interdisciplinary approaches to investigate fundamental questions about the assembly, regulation, and dynamics of photosynthesis. Current lab members study the biosynthesis and function of photosynthetic pigments, assembly and repair of photosynthetic reaction centers, structure and dynamics of the photosynthetic membrane, mechanisms involved in sensing excess light, singlet oxygen signaling, transcriptional regulation of photosynthesis and photoprotection by light and carbon, and regulation of photosynthetic light harvesting in saturating light. By comparing how photosynthesis works in diverse organisms, we hope to uncover general design principles of natural photosynthesis as well as unique adaptations to different environments.

    [*] Grow and maintain algal strains and plants including [i]Chlamydomonas reinhardtii[/i], Arabidopsis, Brachypodium, tobacco and rice and monitor overall health and contamination of strains in a timely manner.
    [*] Generation and maintenance of Brachypodium callus by embryo dissection.
    [*] Perform molecular biology experiments to assist studies of specific algal and plant genes including but not limited to, cloning genes, transformation of algal and plant strains to study gene function, crossing algal and plant strains to study relationship between genes, extraction of genomic DNA and genotyping by PCR, RNA quantification using RT-qPCR, and immunoblotting.
    [*] Physiologically phenotype and screen plants using methods including, but not limited to, HPLC analysis to determine pigment and tocopherol content, chlorophyll fluorescence measurement to evaluate photosynthetic properties and non-photochemical quenching, gas exchange analysis, enzyme kinetic assays, testing sensitivity to abiotic stress and/or chemicals, and metabolite content assay in plant tissues including triacylglycerides, sugars, and starch.
    [*] Participate in the development and optimization of abiotic stress treatments for algae and plants.
    [*] Assist Lab Manager with maintenance of general lab supplies, such as sterilizing glassware and plasticware and media preparation.
    [*] Provide support to Lab Manager as needed, for example, when new equipment arrives, during equipment relocation, to fill in when work-study student is unable to fulfill their duties.
    [*] Attend group meetings, and assist other researchers in the lab as needed.
    [*] Keep accurate and detailed records of laboratory work (protocols and results) to ensure that results could be replicated by others.
    [*] Manage data on algal and plant strains.
    [*] Give oral presentations at laboratory meetings.[/list]

    Required Qualifications
    [*] Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
    [*] Basic lab skills, preparing solutions, and sterile technique required.
    [*] Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
    [*] Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience/training. [/list]

    Preferred Qualifications
    [*] Basic understanding of algal and plant biology and photosynthesis preferred.
    [*] Bachelor's degree in biology-related areas strongly preferred and/or equivalent education or experience/training.[/list]

    Salary & Benefits

    This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
