    *JOB DESCRIPTION*

    *DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:*

    The work involves supervising a conditioning program for all athletes at a community college; coaches varsity sports. Under general supervision of the Director of Athletics, is responsible for training and conditioning functions of a collegiate-athletic program. Will supervise and maintain multiple training rooms under the guidelines of the NYSED. Specific duties will relate to the care of collegiate athletes, injury rehabilitation, injury prevention, and administration. Does related work as required.

    *TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:*

    * Works cooperatively with all coaches of all sports in setting up and carrying out a program of conditioning for all athletes;
    * Works with and under the direction of the school physician or attending physician in respect to: a) reconditioning program; b) operation of therapeutic devices; c) fitting of braces, guards, and other devices;
    * Administers first aid to injured athletes on the field, in the gymnasium, and in the training room;
    * Applies protective or injury preventive devices such as strapping, bandaging, and braces;
    * Works extensively with coaches and the Athletic Director in selecting protective equipment and other athletic gear and checking it for safety;
    * Supervises the training room which includes requisitioning and storage of supplies and equipment, keeping of records, maintaining an inventory, and management of a yearly budget;
    * Supervises student aides or other staff members in training room procedures;
    * Counsels and advises athletes and coaches on exercise program, diet, rest, and other related matters;
    * Maintain a healthy and sanitary environment;
    * Works cooperatively with the nurse to schedule and conduct physicals and maintain health records of all athletes.



    *KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:*

    Thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology; thorough knowledge of athletic conditioning techniques and procedures; thorough knowledge of first aid procedures; ability to conduct effective athletic conditioning and training programs; ability to coach varsity sports, initiative; resourcefulness; dependability; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

    *MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:*

    A. Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field and one (1) year experience in athletic training;
    or
    B. Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field and two (2) years’ experience in athletic training;
    or
    C. An equivalent combination of athletic training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B)

    Certification through the NATABOC and a license issued by the NYSED as a Certified Athletic Trainer preferred along with the qualifications as stated under (A) or (B) above.
