Department Summary
The Department of Biological Sciences provides professional expertise and service to local, state, national and international constituencies, while promoting the discovery, advancement, and dissemination of basic and applied knowledge in the life and environmental sciences. The Department of Biological Sciences, one of four departments in the College of Science, has over 40 faculty, 175 graduate and 3,000 undergraduate students. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to research and teaching in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, and Organismal-environment interactions.

Position Overview
Purchasing and general office duties for departmental, fee-funded and grant-funded accounts. Receive and distribute merchandise to departmental and laboratory staff, researchers, and professors. Maintain stockroom inventory, provide customer service, maintain files and documents. Assist users with liquid nitrogen, departmental copier/printer, mail services. Contact person for copier/printer repair and service.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma/GED equivalent and four years of experience in inventory, purchasing or related field. Substitution of education for experience allowed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skill in making mathematical calculations and computations.
  • Ability to keep records, to assemble and organize data, and to prepare and submit reports in acceptable formats.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Experience in inventory stock control which includes purchasing, receiving and distributing stock.
  • Experience with computer data base systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of State of Texas purchasing and capital equipment, inventory system a plus.

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Two years of progressively responsible office administration experience.
  • Knowledge and skills in handling liquid nitrogen and compressed gas cylinders.
  • The use of independent judgment and initiative that includes complex and responsible administrative clerical work and public relations functions.
  • Must be able to handle a wide variety of issues independently with minimal supervision and must be well-organized.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting/budgeting procedures.
  • Knowledge of processing requisitions and purchase orders.
