Position Summary:

The Native American Student Center (NASC) Program Coordinator will be responsible for designing, developing and implementing culturally responsive programs for the benefit of all students, with targeted emphasis upon Native American students to support their academic, cultural and social success at the University. Coordinator will develop and coordinate educational outreach programs that address Native American issues at the University and surrounding community; coordinate the HOIST program; advise Native American students and their organizations; facilitate the NASC mentoring program; provide support and advocacy to Native American students; develop and instruct courses within the Indigenous Scholars Training for Excellence Program; develop strategies for the recruitment and retention of Native American students; and provide all office management responsibilities for NASC. This position will include after hours and weekend work and will assist in supervision of work study and other student/temporary workers. The Coordinator will assist in the promotion of the Native American Student Center by maintaining the NASC web page and designing, producing and delivering communications for NASC such as newsletters and promotional material. In addition, the Coordinator will positively contribute to NASC and Equity and Diversity team efforts and will maintain records related to all of the above duties. The Coordinator will also assume responsibilities of the Director in the absence of the Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelors degree in education, psychology, sociology, or other related area and 3+ years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling 7+ years.

- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws relating to the program/project area; computer operation and software programs; program planning and implementation; conducting independent research; designing and conducting training programs; and providing liaison with customer/provider groups; advanced understanding of, and appreciation for diversity; and demonstrated knowledge of multicultural issues in higher education.

- Demonstrated self-starter requiring little supervision. Excellent organization and time management skills to meet deadlines and the ability to multi-task; excellent oral and written communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills.

- Demonstrated experience: developing; recommending, and evaluating program procedures and recommending changes; developing technical written materials such as policies, technical manuals or rules/regulations; providing technical program assistance to staff; gathering, assembling, correlating, and analyzing facts; devising solutions to problems; writing concise reports, and developing and evaluating policies and procedures.

- Demonstrated experience working effectively with individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds; evidence of ability to provide leadership and problem-solving skills in analyzing diversity and Native American education needs specifically to college students; ability to work with students in a mentoring/advising role; ability to work collaboratively with on- and-off campus resources; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other student service professionals and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Masters degree or equivalent in higher education or other related area;
3+ years of experience organizing, coordinating, and/or managing academic retention programs.

- Familiarity with UI departments and services.

- Ability to: Travel, work weekends, after regular business hours and holidays.
