The Department of Music offers courses in the disciplines of composition, ethnomusicology, musicology, performance, technology, and theory. Our curriculum is inclusive and diverse, with emphasis on the traditions of Western concert music, American music (especially African American music and jazz), and global music (especially African, Arab, Jewish, and Asian musics).


We provide opportunities for individual study of instrumental and vocal performance and participation in performing ensembles for academic credit. The courses, programs, and facilities of the Music Department are open to all members of the Tufts community. Degrees offered are a major or minor in Music, Sound, and Culture; a minor in Music Engineering; and a Master of Arts in Music.

What You'll Do

This is a hybrid role. The expectation is that the role will be in person through the academic year, with the possibility of hybrid flexibility during summers or between semesters.


Under limited supervision of the Department Administrator, the Staff Assistant performs complex and diverse administrative duties for the Music department.  Serves as a central source of information and problem solving for students, faculty, staff and external constituents and answers questions about the department through telephone, email, and face-to-face communication.  Guiding a team of Main Office student workers, responsible for scheduling all classroom spaces and practice rooms; handling instrument loans and locker assignments; managing key and swipe card access; maintaining inventories of and resolving minor issues with instruments, technology, and other equipment.  Responsible for scheduling work shifts, hiring, training, and providing daily work direction to student workers of the Main Office.  Provides administrative support such as office and shared space upkeep, reimbursements and payments, departmental purchases, and travel arrangements. May assist in updating website content and design. Other duties as assigned. 

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and skill as typically required by a high school diploma/GED and 2-4 years of administrative experience or college degree with 1-3 years’ experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including word processing, editing, graphics, spreadsheet and database knowledge. 
  • Bookkeeping or basic accounting knowledge.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
