Assistant - GEAR UP Outreach Mentor East High School (Part-Time Variable Hour)

Position Category: Staff - Part-Time (Variable Hour)


Utah Valley University seeks to attract and retain a high-performing and diverse workforce in which employee differences are respected and valued.
  • The Assistant Gear-UP Mentor will coordinate student academic progress, Credit Recovery, and track attendance with professional and highly qualified GEAR UP counselors. GEAR UP counselors will also plan and provide GEAR UP academic, outreach, and group activities.
  • Works closely with GEAR UP counselors to determine students at-risk to fail because of absenteeism and poor performance in classes.
  • Tracks and follows up with students as requested by a GEAR UP counselor, and keeps contact with parents/guardians. Organizes and assists with GEAR UP group, fundraising, and outreach activities.
  • Attends college tours, parent/student nights, and other GEAR UP group and outreach activities as requested by GEAR UP counselors.
  • Checks student academic progress and standardized testing results and reports to GEAR UP counselor.
  • Administers and tracks student and parents' survey completion. Mentors students by talking to them about good decision-making processes and providing study-skills help.
  • Tutors as needed and requested by GEAR UP counselors.

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with an associates degree plus one year of experience related to the Summary of Duties or any combination of education and experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling three years.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic academic knowledge as a result of a completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and have sufficient college preparation to pursue a college curriculum.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Teaching skills and be able to tutor students of various academic levels.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to organize schedules, prioritize tasks, and follow-through on assignments.
  • Must be able to successfully interact with students with diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Fluency in Spanish, both speaking and writing.

Physical Requirements:

Physical ability to perform manual work.

Benefits Summary:

You may be eligible for a 3 credit hour or 1 class tuition waiver after 6 consecutive months of employment and a minimum of 475 hours worked. Dependents do not qualify for a waiver.

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $10.20 - $13.50
