Departmental Overview

The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 225 regular faculty members, over 5,000 graduate students and undergraduate students, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. The College is composed of seven top academic departments and numerous innovative research centers spanning the fields of nanotechnology, computer science, energy, new health care technologies, the environment and much more.

The Development Team supports the College of Engineering's core priorities through an integrated marketing and fundraising program designed to reach over 60,000 alumni, friends, students, foundations, and corporate partners. During the most recently completed fiscal year, 2019, the College of Engineering raised more than $79 million through private gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

The Development Associate supports the College's high-impact fundraising program and contributes to the team's high-level fundraising priorities. The position reports to the Assistant Dean of Development. Responsibilities include developing materials for the College's leadership and major benefactors, organizing related programs and projects; and tracking the performance of the program on a regular schedule.

Responsibilities

20% Support Major Gifts Priorities & Special Projects:
  • As a key member of the Major Gifts team, assist in the development of high-level proposals, presentations, site visits, board meetings, and other special events to meet key fundraising objectives.
  • Develop and design materials in collaboration with fundraisers and stewardship colleagues, including proposals, agendas, briefings, background information, slide deck presentations, and tailored correspondence for major donors and prospects.
  • Provide travel assistance and reimbursements for the MGOs for department-related travel.


Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean.


20% Donor Relations:
  • Respond to inquiries from donors, event attendees, and the public.
  • Draft donor correspondence, assist with gift acknowledgements, and stewardship.
  • Assist with production of tailored, in-house donor mailings and other special projects.


20% Research & Data Analysis:
  • Work with the Development team to identify needs for complex data, refine and articulate those needs, and work with Prospect Management and in-house data team to design and deliver effective reports.
  • Provide weekly reports on fundraising goals (tracking gifts to solicit and close, year-to-date totals, etc).
  • Ensure that recorded donor data and designations are accurate and complete, as the prime liaison from Major Gifts to the central campus Donor Research unit.
  • Conduct or obtain research on individuals and companies to identify/qualify new donors or support proposal development.
  • Research and analyze metrics to illustrate fundraising-program trends, impact of activities, and results. Serve as the Major Gifts team's authority on donor-database systems, advising the Major Gifts Officers and recommending training when needed.



15% Project Management:
  • Plan, schedule, and implement fundraising and projects, programs, and events in the area of Major Gifts.


Assess office procedures and practices, recommend enhancements for efficiency and effectiveness, and manage implementation.


15% Event Planning & Execution:
  • In collaboration with Events and Programs team and Donor Stewardship, assist with special events (including luncheons, dinners, small receptions, and high-level board meetings), sometimes as the lead event planner.
  • Play a central role in supporting complex major events managed by College Relations, (including programs and receptions for major donors, large conferences, public lectures, and College commencement ceremonies).


Attend major events, both to assist in their execution and to meet and cultivate donors who attend.


10% Planning & Team Coordination:
  • Participate in short- and long-range Major Gifts planning, coordinating fundraising processes and tracking for the team.
  • In consultation with Assistant Dean and Associate Director of Stewardship, manages office wide projects and keeps initiatives on track.
  • Works with Assistant Dean and others, develop agenda for weekly meetings with Development Team, Assistant Dean, and individual meetings with Development Team members. Attend selected meetings and assist with follow-up.


May supervise a work-study student and assign tasks in coordination with other work groups in College Relations.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience in fundraising and donor development.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
  • Highly detail oriented with a critical degree of accuracy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements, programs, faculty activities, and infrastructure.
  • Outstanding customer service ethic for working with campus donors.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer and database systems, to facilitate research, extract meaningful data for program analysis, and prepare documents and presentation materials.
  • Thorough project-management skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • In-Design and Adobe suite experience highly preferred.
