The Goldman School of Public Policy is a graduate school that prepares students for careers in public leadership.
The majority of the students at GSPP are enrolled in the Master of Public Policy (MPP) program, which emphasizes the applied and quantitative dimensions of policy making. The MPP may also be earned concurrently with degrees from several other UC Berkeley schools: law, public health, engineering, social welfare, international and area studies and the Energy Resources Group. GSPP also offers a Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program which focuses on policy management and leadership as well as a doctoral program for students interested in policy research. While the Goldman School does not offer a bachelors-level degree, the public policy minor is available to undergraduates enrolled at UC Berkeley.
Goldman School faculty represent the top researchers in their respective fields, which include economics, political science, law, social psychology and engineering. Their expertise ranges from education policy to racial profiling to clean energy. As teachers, they are dedicated to training tomorrow's policy leaders. As researchers, their work is shaping public policy today.
Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization with a special focus on admissions diversity outreach and recruitment, academic advising and counseling, and alumni relations and outreach.
Within an academic department/school/college provides, and makes recommendations for the improvement of the following programs:
Recruitment and Admissions:
- Plans and implements diversity outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley and attends recruitment events, workshops, and conferences. Supports all aspects of admissions and recruitment efforts, with a special focus on diversity recruitment of underrepresented applicants.
- Develops a robust diversity outreach and recruitment plan for the School's graduate programs that focuses on increasing the number of prospective students from historically underrepresented communities (e.g., underrepresented groups (URM) and first-generation students).
- Leads the School's nationwide efforts to develop and maintain outreach and recruitment partnerships with specifically targeted institutions (e.g., universities, colleges, and organizations, such as Hispanic Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, California State Universities, Community Colleges, Recruitment and Retention Centers, Diverse Affinity Groups and National Diversity Organizations, etc.) to generate quality, diverse applicants.
- Collaborates and coordinates with the Graduate Division, Equity & Inclusion, People & Culture and other campus stakeholders in the diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging fields.
- Identifies and creates admissions recruitment pipeline partnerships with K-16 constituents, including partnerships with nationwide universities, colleges and organizations to yield a diverse applicant pool.
- With IT team, develops an online tracking system for diverse prospective applicants and provide personalized follow-up to all URM applicants to increase the School's applicant pool.
- Launches new diversity ambassadors program and engages Goldman faculty, staff, alumni, and students to support diversity outreach, recruitment, and retention efforts.
- Identifies, plans, and organizes diversity outreach and recruitment events, webinars, social media outreach, conferences, new admit days, and other initiatives that support diversity recruitment.
- Supports the School's Admissions team to meet overall student and diversity yield goals.
- Provides support and participates in GSPP's yield activities including the planning and implementation of GSPP's New Admit Days and other recruitment events.
- Represents GSPP at recruitment events, conferences, and workshops on campus & nationwide to recruit a diverse applicant pool.
Academic Advising and Counseling:
- Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments.
- Specifically, the SSA & DIC will focus on advising, counseling and supporting underrepresented student groups and also advise public policy minor undergraduate students.
- Provides advising, counseling, and support to underrepresented groups and first-generation students to promote an inclusive and supportive environment.
- Provides advising to public policy minor undergraduate students, including responding to emails about academic requirements, procedures, and exceptions, and meet with minors who need academic guidance.
- Advises students on financial aid options on campus and extramural fellowship opportunities.
- Monitors student advising and support of Academic Student Employee (ASE) positions, including Graduate Student Instructor (GSI), Reader, Tutor and Readers.
- Serves as the primary staff advisor for ASE (GSI, Reader, Tutor, and Researcher) positions, including advising and supporting current students and prospective applicants on how to solidify and apply for ASE opportunities at GSPP and throughout the entire campus.
- Advises on fellowship, research, and summer internship programs; develops and maintains network of professional contacts, universities, & organizations interested in hiring GSPP students.
- Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, including alumni engagement activities such as the alumni dinner, gatherings, and reunions, admissions recruitment events, as well as other student events and workshops.
- Leads the implementation of alumni participation in MPP admissions and recruitment efforts, including the MPP Alumni Phone Bank, and any other Alumni Board work that involves admissions, recruitment, diversity, etc.
- Provides outreach and administrative support for GSPP's Alumni Dinner, including outreach to alumni and support on all aspects of event planning and implementation.
- Leads the implementation and planning of GSPP Alumni Gatherings (an annual program where local alumni host incoming students welcoming them to UC Berkeley and GSPP) and other events as needed.
- Provides support and outreach for the implementation and planning of GSPP's Alumni Reunions.
- Leads and supports the programming and implementation of student events, workshops, and activities (e.g., annual Fall Feast, new student orientation, workshops, job fairs, and other events).
Other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of university admissions outreach, recruitment, and retention of diverse student populations.
- Multicultural competencies and the ability to work with and engage with diverse populations.
- Strong public speaking and writing skills, including experience delivering public presentations to large diverse audiences.
- Experience creating partnerships with diverse education constituents (e.g., schools, colleges, and universities).
- Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Service oriented with skills in active listening and critical thinking.
- Highly organized with the ability to multi-task and manage a diverse portfolio of duties.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn University processes/procedures and familiarity with University rules/regulations.
- Strong Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Skilled in problem identification with the ability to exercise sound judgement to develop effective solutions.
- Knowledge of or ability to learrn departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends, as well as some travel is required.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent combination of education and experience/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $50,400.00 - $72,800.00.
