The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operations of buildings and utility systems, consisting of approximately 5.7 million square feet of space across four campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, Boston and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts ). This role will be hybrid and based out of Medford, MA.
A broad range of services are provided to support each campus which include the repair and maintenance of the University’s assets, capital renewal, engineering, energy and utilities management, energy procurement, waste management, event management, care of grounds, janitorial and pest services. We are committed to developing the highest standards of quality, performance, and continuous improvement across each department. We work very closely with the Department of Industrial Hygiene & Lab Safety coordinating daily operations with Tufts Police, Fire Marshalls, and local agencies. We also support the planning, design, construction, and commissioning turnover processes for major renovations and new construction in conjunction with the Departments of Capital Planning and Capital Programs. This role will have reporting requirements that include close coordination, support, and services to these departments.
The campus energy systems consist of 13.8kV, 4160V, 480V and 208V electrical systems, high and low pressure steam, process steam, hot water, and chilled water provided by centralized and distributed boilers, chillers, substations, power generation and heat recovery equipment. These services are distributed primarily through direct buried conduit and piping systems owned and operated by the University. Building envelope condition and performance also play a key role in controlling energy and indoor air quality. The building and utility infrastructure are undergoing targeted renovations and end of life upgrades to support decarbonization initiatives with a carbon neutral by 2050 commitment. This role will be responsible for managing and reporting on findings from condition assessments, re-commissioning, measurement & verification, and annual lab re-verification projects.

We are searching for a Commissioning Measurement and Verification Engineer to oversee the successful implementation and execution of a commissioning, measurement & verification program for Tufts University. If you have a passion for problem solving and proven experience with driving continuous improvement programs, we want you on our team!
Risk exists on every project, and it is critical that we find someone who understands how design, construction, and operations are impacted. This drives the need to ensure issues and risks are effectively communicated so that they can be properly weighted and prioritized with each project team. This position may serve as a technical lead and/or project manager on small to medium scale facilities and lab recertification projects.
This position may also serve as a financial advisor to the capital planning and renewal departments to capture deferred work that cannot be addressed in a current project scope, schedule, or budget. Knowledge of existing conditions will grow over time and your participation in feasibility studies, planning studies, and design efforts will be crucial in laying the foundation for delivery of safe, reliable, and sustainable buildings and infrastructure. Initially support to the planning and project management teams responsible for renovations and new construction will entail ensuring adherence to and applicable Tufts policies, guidelines, and standards. This position will also be a key stakeholder in driving lessons learned revisions and new policy, guidelines, and standards.
The Commissioning Measurement and Verification Engineer will be concentrating on large amounts of information and managing multiple assignments. We are looking for an individual that can remain focused and function independently ensuring respectful collaboration with other team members. While we are looking for a core set of competencies in this field, help us understand what you do and do not know, and we’ll help you fill in gaps with ongoing training and development programs.
Working closely with project planning and development teams standards and contract language must procures the tasks, process flows, resources and physical documentation from consultants and contractors supporting the commissioning program. With many projects taking place at various phases in their lifecycle, we will bring you up to speed on how we manage this process. Tracking issues for each project can get cumbersome using excel, if you do not have experience with commissioning software training will be made available to those who are unfamiliar or need refreshers. While we would expect most applicants to have some digital issue tracking experience we are more interested in your technical aptitude, ability to effectively communicate, issue resolution and follow through capabilities.
Our projects deliver a variety of building and utility systems that range from very simple to sophisticated technology applications. You will be responsible for overseeing the training curriculum developed by each project ensuring Tufts users receive the materials and guidance on how to operate, maintain, and diagnose problems in these systems. Content that explains integrated life safety systems will be used to support development of standard operating procedures and coordination of annual drills for existing and new staff responsible for the care of this infrastructure. On smaller projects you will take the lead in developing the curriculum for the operations and research staff. Projects transferred to operations will require continued support and as a collaborative partner with facilities management, technicians, and control operators, your team will be looking to you for clear instruction verbally and in written work orders. You will also be involved in auditing select space and systems to support engineering assessments utilizing automation system alarms, trends and a continuous commissioning software.
The Engineering & Utilities department is a hybrid team headquartered in Medford, MA. A blend of remote and onsite work will require the Commissioning Measurement and Verification Engineer to travel between the different campuses where the need will fluctuate based on requests for support from the Facilities, Capital Programs, Engineering & Utilities, and Lab Safety departments. While infrequent, on-site support may be required to help resolve unplanned project needs and emergencies. When onsite, work may require entering and navigating building envelope systems and spaces housing mechanical/electrical systems. This includes conducting inspections in both small/confined and high spaces including roofs. Some lifting of hatches may be required.
What We're Looking For
- Four (4) year degree or equivalent in engineering field of study
- Experience from comparable technical positions & industry will be considered including the power, process, healthcare, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, and/or utilities.
- A recognized professional certification, registration, or applicable military experience may also be considered to help augment degree and/or experience expectations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills: ability to synthesize and effectively communicate complicated concepts to general audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills to foster effective working relationships at all levels
- Technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and controls systems design and construction phase testing
- Technical knowledge of building envelope design or construction or testing
- Working knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal/national statutes and guidelines
- Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner

Candidates are expected to be forthcoming with their level of understanding and exposure to the following areas:
- Experience with IBM Maximo or other work order management systems preferred but not required.
- Experience with navigating commercial and industrial automation systems, data historians, HMI’s, and trending tools. Ie. JCI Metasys, SE Structureware, Rockwell Factory Talk
- Measurement & Verification Certification or working knowledge of the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP). Credentials to obtain certification after 10-14 months of service required.
- Certification(s) in Building Commissioning, Energy Management, Energy Auditing
- Experience with using automation and analytics to assist with the Measurement & Verification process in retro-commissioning (RCx), existing building commissioning (EBCx), monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx), and ongoing commissioning (Cx) processes.
- Experience with developing Cx, M&V, Lab Verification & Lab Validation standards.
- Experience with performing facility condition assessments
- Experience with construction and owner project management software: BIM 360, Procore, EBuilder, Bluebeam, P6
- Experience with commissioning software CxAlloy, BlueRithm, Facility Grid
- Participating member in one or more of the following organizations: AABC Commissioning Group, Building Commissioning Association, NEBB, Energy Management Association, Association of Energy Engineers, Cx Energy, ASME, Bacnet International, International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories
- Experience with commissioning and qualification of pharmaceutical, bio-tech, medical device, FDA/GMP facilities
- Experience with lab re-verification of biosafety level 2 and 3 labs, Vivariums, and other types of mission critical, research, animal facilities
