The Hospital for Large Animals (HLA) provides high quality medical/surgical care to inpatient, outpatient and critical/emergency large animal cases. In addition to patient care, employees are required to teach and support the veterinary students throughout their rotation in the HLA. This position supports the doctors and veterinary technicians, ensuring quality veterinary care, educating clients in health care, and ensuring a safe and effective hospital environment.The Sports Medicine Service Veterinary Technician (SMSVT) position supports the clinicians, residents, interns and students within the Sports Medicine and Surgery Services at the HLA. This service manages patient cases suffering from orthopedic and respiratory conditions affecting performance. The SMSVT is a key figure in facilitating excellent patient care, client services and overall service efficiency within the Sports Medicine Service in the HLA. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, scheduling of appointments for inpatients and outpatients, coordinating any appropriate procedures with the other services within the hospital (ultrasound, cardiology, internal medicine, ophthalmology, etc.) as needed, obtaining relevant information and history (both prior and during the visit from owners, trainers and referring veterinarians), complete medical records and assisting with patient diagnostics and treatment (such as ultrasound, radiographs, standing and dynamic endoscopy, restraining patients for procedures, jogging and lunging horses, etc.) In addition, the position is knowledgeable and proficient with his/her technical duties regarding orthopedic (arthroscopy, bursoscopy, tenoscopy, fracture fixation, use of intra-operative fluoroscopy, etc.) and upper respiratory (laryngeal, pharyngeal and sinus conditions, as well as the use of laser) surgical procedures. Duties also include maintaining inventory of medical supplies and hospital equipment. The SMSVT makes decisions involving client service and patient care by coordinating treatment orders and work direction. Must be able to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner and communicate/interact with members of other services as well as other sections of the hospital. Duties include working closely with Front Desk management, HLA clinicians, technicians and animal care attendants. The SMSVT has direct contact with clients and will be asked to address client questions and concerns regarding patient care and hospital policies. A strong interpersonal skill to provide good customer service is essential to the success of the position. The SMSVT will have direct contact with clinicians, other technicians, technical assistants, residents, interns and students. Strong interpersonal skills when working with others are essential to the success of the position.
