University Advancement develops philanthropic financial support from alumni, parents, friends, foundations and other individuals and organizations to advance the academic and programmatic priorities of Tufts University. The division is engaged in building the annual fund through direct mail, telephone solicitation programs, volunteer solicitation initiatives and other means, simultaneously developing a broad base for engaging donors. The Division further works to secure major gifts from the same sources for building projects, endowment, program development and other needs and stewards gifts to ensure that our donors’ gift restrictions are honored and that donors are kept well informed of the impact of their contributions. DEPARTMENT SUMMARY
The development office for the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University (SMFA at Tufts) is responsible for raising significant philanthropic resources necessary to meet the school’s needs and develops long-term relationships with alumni, parents, faculty and friends. Face-to-face visits, phone calls, events, and direct mail are employed to cultivate prospects, develop awareness of the school’s strengths, needs and priorities while setting the stage for major gift solicitations.

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Development for SMFA at Tufts, the Assistant Director of Development raises both annual and major gifts. S/he will develop and implement comprehensive strategies to secure significant philanthropic support for the school, utilizing face-to-face meetings, direct mail, and events. The Assistant Director is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of an assigned portfolio of leadership annual fund and major gift prospects interested in supporting the arts at Tufts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Major Gift and Leadership Annual Fund Development (70%)
Identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit a portfolio of donors with philanthropic capacity for gifts of $10,000 + through at least 100+ substantive contacts annually, 80% of which should be face-to-face meetings.
Collaborates with colleagues in Advancement, academic leaders and high-level volunteers to maximize giving to SMFA at Tufts.
Coordinate opportunities to engage donors and prospects through campus visits, events, or meetings with faculty, staff and other university officials.
Leverage university-wide initiatives, such as Giving Tuesday, to engage volunteers in peer-to-peer fundraising efforts.
Utilize Advance database to run reports, manage portfolio, document strategy and record all steps of the donor engagement process.
Draft materials for prospect cultivation and solicitation, including talking points, correspondence, proposals, briefings, contact reports, gift agreements and other documents that clearly articulate the school’s case for support.
Communications and Direct Mail (20%)
Partner with University Communications and Marketing and the Tufts Annual Giving program to create and manage a multidimensional appeal strategy that utilizes a variety of mediums (e.g., electronic solicitation, e-newsletter, direct mail appeals, face-to-face solicitations)
Ensure that SMFA at Tufts’ priorities and needs are communicated to and promoted by the division’s frontline fundraisers.
Art Sale and Events (10%)
Utilize the annual art sale to secure revenue through art purchases.
Qualify and cultivate art buyers as prospective philanthropic donors.
Leverage existing SMFA and Tufts events to increase donor engagement with the School.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Experience
Bachelor’s Degree and 3-5 years of successful experience in fundraising or comparable activity.
Comfortable personally soliciting individuals for four and five figure gifts.
Driver’s License.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint and some experience with complex databases.
Strong relationship building skills as well as writing and communication skills.
This position requires some travel as well as periodic night and weekend work.
Additional Preferred Experience
Experience in higher education and/or arts organizations preferred.
Experience with Advance, Raisers Edge or similar complex databases preferred.
Ability to juggle multiple priorities with initiative, proficiency and diplomacy.
