The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking an Insurance Coordinator who will work within the department's Sports Medicine unit.
The Insurance Coordinator manages all daily operations of insurance services for more than 800 student-athletes. The Insurance Coordinator ensures that medical services are properly authorized by Sports Medicine physicians, submits claims to the athletes' primary insurance carriers and to the secondary athletic insurance plan, oversees and coordinates the benefits between plans, and monitors and reconciles deductibles paid by the athletic insurance carrier on behalf of IA. The Insurance Coordinator must communicate with the student-athlete and his or her parents, athletic trainers, Sports Medicine physicians, specialist physicians, primary care providers, coaches, insurance plan representative and insurance brokers.
Daily responsibilities for the Insurance Coordinator as listed above, including the following:
- Medical Services Payment Management Ensures all medical bills incurred by student-athletes are submitted to the correct insurance carrier and processed in a timely fashion. Maintain records of all claims paid by the athletic insurance plan carrier against the deductible and reconcile deductible payments. Serves as liaison between Sports Medicine physicians and insurance carriers. Provides doctor's offices and insurance carriers with necessary and pertinent information about student-athletes and their injuries. Provides efficient support for patient care, including scheduling appointments, providing directions, etc. Confirms enrollment in all relevant insurance plans. Processes outside referrals. Determines if treatment is for an athletic-related or non-athletic-related injury or illness. Performs data analysis on athletic insurance plan performance and on specific providers or treatments. Develops and maintains customized software applications to manage all data associated with Athletic Insurance Program. Maintains database to record billing, deductible, and provider contact information. Analyzes business needs and recommends modifications and changes of procedures and forms
- In depth knowledge of health insurance industry, IA programs, sports medicine. Knowledge of medical procedures, medical terminology, claims processing operations, surgical procedures, anatomy, etc. Experience with project management, as demonstrated by ability to organize, coordinate and complete projects effectively and within deadlines Experience with management of clinical data, including collection of data elements, verification of data integrity, querying databases to extract data, and reporting information in a useful format. Expert user of Windows and the Microsoft Office suite, including word-processing, spreadsheet systems, and database programs. Experience upholding high standards of customer service in a demanding and complex health care organization. Extremely well organized, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, possess excellent analytical skills. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to build effective, professional working relationships. Able to function independently, exert creative problem-solving abilities on a regular basis, and exercise sound judgment. Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Pacific-12 Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
- Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and experience.
- Previous experience working in an athletics department.
Salary & Benefits
This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
