Position Summary
The University at Buffalo is looking for a Network Analyst in the Network and Communication Services (NCS) Tier-2 support team. This team is responsible for installation and troubleshooting of voice and data services across the University campuses, and as a member of this team you will work on a wide variety of data communications and networking equipment. This is an opportunity for you to troubleshoot problems, understand customer needs, determine failures, suggest improvements to wireless coverage, and directly support the teaching and research mission of the University.
Key Duties:
- Install, test, and troubleshoot network hardware and software.
- Ensure campus network security and reliability.
- Assess and implement technology solutions for the university community.
- Support and maintain IT services, including wireless and VoIP infrastructure.
- Perform telecommunications installations and repairs.
- Supervise and train student assistants for network maintenance.
- Develop and document cabling and equipment standards.
- Procure necessary cabling materials and tools.
- Prioritize and manage multiple projects and service requests.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of experience in Information Technology or Computer Science OR master’s degree with 1 year of experience in computing and networking on complex networks. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience should encompass technical aspects of computing and networking on complex networks. This is a technical position requiring experience with the design, installation, maintenance of data communications and networking equipment, networking and analytical techniques, and experience in selected areas of computer applications and networks.
- This position requires travel. Appointees will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with installing and maintaining integrated communications networks, voice, and data services, and inside cable plants is highly desirable.
- Additional specialized training in appropriate disciplines. (i.e. Wireless Technology, IP networking, including Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing technologies, specialized training from a technical school, military and/or vendor in telecommunications or closely related field, digital and analog electronics, voice networking, fiber optic infrastructure, etc.)
- Experience with Microsoft Office productivity tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, Visio).
- Desired technical skills: knowledge of network operating systems, experience managing and troubleshooting wireless networks and variety of wireless clients, fiber optic and copper plant topologies, Voice over IP technologies, knowledge of network analysis, development, programming, and understanding of directory services.
- Experience in a university environment.
Physical Demands
- Occasionally ascends or descends a ladder, use standard telecommunications tools/ equipment, and differentiate colors used for standard wire coding. Must be able to lift and move network hardware weighing up to (50lbs or 75lbs).
- Visit active construction sites using appropriate personal protective equipment.
