Departmental Overview

The UCMP is a research unit on the UC Berkeley campus and its mission is to investigate and promote the understanding of the history of life and the diversity of the Earth's biota through research and education. UCMP has a long history of developing online educational resources for broad audiences including the Understanding Evolution, Understanding Science, and Understanding Global Change websites.

Responsibilities

  • Provides analyses of complex scientific datasets, testing of visualization software, and needs assessments for the project working to support all levels of managers.
  • Researches and summarizes best practices in the field of participatory (community and citizen) science and data analysis and visualization.
  • Conducts post-implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements to software to meet project goals.
  • Coordinates FieldScope platform use with diverse external partners.
  • Provides technical guidance for partner and public use of the software and software developers.
  • Prepares technical guidance and educational resources for partnering projects and the public.
  • Coordinates implementation of data collection and analysis efforts with participatory science projects across the country.
  • Researches and drafts complex proposals and reports regarding platform use to inform FieldScope project internal goals and external partnership practices.


Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of participatory science practices, including collection and analysis tools.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive community data.
  • Experience developing software and solving design challenges.
  • Strong skills in managing, organizing, cleaning, analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for use in participatory science programs.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes and coordinate work across time zones.
  • Strong skills in developing and maintaining project management practices and workflows.


Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of experience in data management, project management, and software development and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $70,100.00.

  • This is a 24-month, 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a remote-friendly position, eligible for up to 100% remote capability.
