Position Summary

Finally find your work/life balance and achieve climate neutrality with us while you’re at it. University Facilities Design and Construction Department seeks an experienced, visionary, currently licensed architect to serve as part of a growing internal design team. This group collaborates daily to ensure the safe, efficient, and sustainable design of multiple major construction projects simultaneously, while assuring the unrestricted pursuit of the University’s overall mission as a flagship SUNY research institution.

In this architectural role, ongoing responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Preparation and sealing of contract documents including drawings and specifications, support of ongoing project needs throughout construction, and active participation in the occupation of finished spaces and related systems.
  • Collaboration with external design consultants hired to prepare contract documents from concept to closeout.
  • Work with end users and project stakeholders to ensure that project requirements are met.
  • Serve as a peer reviewer of architectural scope in ongoing design reviews for both internally and externally designed UB projects.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert of architecture for the University to support ongoing operations, sustainability efforts, and educational needs.
  • Interface with outside agencies including SUCFSUNY OCFNYS Division of Standards and Codes, National Grid, National Fuel, NYPANYSERDA, and relevant vendors to coordinate construction documents.

Minimum Qualifications

  • New York State registration as a licensed architect with expertise in higher education.
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or related degree with three years of experience in a design role.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the degree.
  • Excellent technical, organizational, and interpersonal skills required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Five years of architectural experience in the design of higher education buildings and the subsets within that occupancy type.
  • Experience with laboratory designs.
  • Demonstration of the ability to collaborate with a team of construction professionals in a large and complex organization.
  • Experience in education renovation and construction projects of similar size and scope desired; cost forecasting experience preferred. Certification as PMPNYCCEO, and/or LEED or equivalent considered.

Physical Demands

Routinely completes field or project site visits and may have to occasionally ascend/descend a ladder or utilize other means to access areas of a project site during construction.
