Departmental Overview

Facilities Services works to maintain a campus-built environment that is conducive to teaching, learning and research. We strive to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the campus community. Facilities Services is comprised of the following units: Campus Recycling and Refuse Services, Custodial Services, Environmental Services, Grounds Operations Shops, Quality Assurance & Customer Service, Sustainability and Engineering Services and People's Park.

Working as part of the skilled trades group and in conformance with the Electrician job scope, the incumbent performs planned and emergency repairs to all building fire alarm and life safety systems, wiring, devices, and equipment in accordance with a division-developed calendar to meet all National Fire Prevention Association, and State fire Marshall's Office compliance requirements. Incumbent performs work to achieve timely completion and full documentary compliance of this planned work along with any emergency or other unplanned fire and life safety system work that may arise.

Responsibilities

A. ELECTRICIAN

  • Responsible for installing new fire alarm devices, including troubleshooting, shop fabrications, predictive and preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, servicing, repairs, or replacements.
  • Participate in the design of assemblies, systems, equipment, and/or controls, whether electrical or mechanical.
  • Prepare detailed drawings with measurements and material specifications based on blueprints and verbal instructions.
  • Perform shop fabrications, predictive and preventive maintenance, inspections, test operations, sustaining services, troubleshooting, and repairs or replacements of complex control and mechanical systems within fire alarm systems.


B. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Adhere to work schedules through the work management program.
  • Consult with the shop superintendent and/or lead for technical guidance.
  • Interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts, and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
  • Support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments.
  • Maintain accurate work records and complete paperwork neatly and on time.
  • Define and describe necessary materials, tools, equipment, work methods, and task sequences.
  • Serve as a liaison with clients, communicating their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or superintendent.
  • Obtain required materials and equipment.


C. SAFETY

  • Adhere to all University and Departmental safety guidelines.
  • Attend job-related and safety training as required.


D. OTHER

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Must have five years verifiable experience with fire alarms
  • Employee must possess five years' experience in a comparable position or related experience in a university, hospital or large building complex, including a minimum of two years performing installation, trouble-shooting, and repair of fire alarm systems.
  • Must possess knowledge and ability to utilize correct tools, techniques and methods for handling specific fire alarm projects by applying thorough knowledge of codes and the skills of a craftsperson.
  • Ability to interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
  • Ability to operate electrical machines, equipment, and other hand and/or power tools needed to perform skill-related job tasks.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and to gain access to areas that normally require stairs, ladders and scaffolding using specific methods to perform job tasks.
  • Ability to safely move supplies and objects up to 75 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with the campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multi- cultural environment.
  • Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize requirements; able to work and support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize interference with others.
  • Ability to read information from equipment manufactures manuals, service requests, layout sketches, blueprints, appropriate state and local government codes, trade-specific manuals and practices, and to
  • determine how the fixture or equipment should perform.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and use color codes effectively.
  • Ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and two-way radio.
  • Ability to execute job assignments in a timely manner.
  • Must be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, weekend on-call, rotating swing shift, watch and holidays.
  • Adhere to Facilities Services' work rules and Code of Conduct.


Education/Training:

  • Education and training in fire alarms can be through documented experience and/or professional development through an accredited college or university.
  • Must possess California State Fire Alarm License (Blue Card).
  • NICET Level I
  • NICET Level II (have or receive within 6 months).
  • CA Driver License

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $65.71, Step 1.0.

  • This is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position.
  • This is a 20% (8 hours/week) position, that is not eligible for UC benefits.
  • This is a one-year, temporary position.
  • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Skilled Crafts Unit (KB) between the University of California and the Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council (ACBCTC).
