Position Summary

The University at Buffalos Office of Residential Maintenance Services is seeking a candidate to fill the Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) position. In this role, you will work with a team of dynamic and diverse individuals and ensure functionality of the plumbing and HVAC systems across UBs North and South campuses. All Student Life trades, and custodial staff work within UBs residential halls and apartments.

In a typical year, Campus Living houses up to 7,500 students at UB. Our skilled trades and custodial staff care for the buildings our students live in. Their priority is the health and safety of our students. Without dedicated cleaners and maintenance staff, the university would not be able to have a residential program.

Key Responsibilities:
Trades Specialists (Plumber & Steamfitter) perform journey-level plumbing and steamfitting work and may supervise others in the installation, alteration, and repair of pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, ventilating, heating control, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.

    • Assigns repairs, troubleshoot, maintain, and install plumbing and heating components.
    • Read blueprints, plan, and lay out work procedures
    • Estimate labor and material requirements for routine work and projects.
    • Respond to daily service request and work orders
    • Work on small plumbing, steam fitting, and HVAC campus projects.

Minimum Qualifications
    • Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson, which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program,
    • OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services;
    • OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State drivers license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
  • Strong understanding of safety standards and procedures
  • Knowledge of applicable NYS plumbing codes and regulations


Physical Demands

  • Frequently moves equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder, to complete maintenance and repairs
  • The person in this position constantly positions self to maintenance or repair equipment at high or low levels where standing, kneeling may be needed for at least 50% of the time

$48,956
