Department Profile
The athletic department operates within the Division of Kinesiology and provides athletic competition within the 3C2A for 19 intercolleigate athletic programs. Currently there are 10 female and nine male sports, including football and wrestling. Approximately 500 male and female student athletes participate annually. This position will work with two other full time athletic trainers and various part time staff to provide service to the program.

Summary
Administers preventive care, treatment, and rehabilitation to student-athletes engaged in various intercollegiate sports. Assures compliance with health and safety standards. Oversees issuance, maintenance, and replacement of athletic injury protective gear. Maintain and replace equipment used for care, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athletes.
Distinguishing Career Features The Athletic Trainer provides leadership over clinical protocols and day-to-day sports training and injury rehabilitation. The Athletic Trainer requires the ability to train and lead other trainers, coordinate athletic rehabilitation programs, oversee equipment and inventory control, and serve as the primary resource in developing athletic rehabilitation plans.

Job Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans and implements components for a sports injury prevention program. Establishes protocols for the treatment, care, and rehabilitation of sports injuries. Inspects practice areas and athletic equipment, consulting with coaches on injury prevention methods.
  • Provides urgent care service for student-athlete injuries sustained during team practices, and athletic events. Conducts the initial clinical evaluation of injuries and administers first aid. Refers students to a physician as needed.
  • Provides protective taping, bracing, and padding for athletes. Assures compliance with safety standards by properly fitting knee and ankle braces, and other protective gear to prevent or protect student-athletes injuries.
  • Coordinates and monitors athletic rehabilitation programs for injured students-athletes. Provides rehabilitation and reconditioning treatment for injuries as diagnosed or prescribed by team physicians. Operates a variety of athletic and medical equipment including a muscle stimulation unit and ultrasound machine.
  • Coordinates training and assignment of athletic trainers (including student trainers) in the areas of prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, first aid, and emergency care for athletic injuries. Coordinates travel arrangements and transportation for trainers and first aid and emergency care equipment to out-of-town athletic events.
  • Educates and counsels athletes about their conditions, including the nature of injuries and the procedures to be followed for recovery.
  • Conducts health screening and limited physical examinations. Conducts injury clinics for in-and-off season athletes.
  • Serves as trainer for home and away athletic events. Provides protective taping and urgent care to injuries. Advises coaches on athlete readiness to resume activity.
  • Provides in-service training to coaches on the prevention, care, conditioning, and emergency treatment of athletic injuries.
  • Participates in the selection of supplies and athletic equipment for the training room. Confers with coaches on training room equipment and supply specifications.
  • Modifies athletic rehabilitation equipment to fit. Fabricates modifications to equipment to accommodate specific injuries or other unique requirements.
  • Maintains a training room in a condition suitable for patient-athlete care. Cleans training room equipment.
  • Coordinates customized off-season physical conditioning programs for athletes according to the physical requirements of specific sport activities/events.
  • Prepares and maintains private and confidential records and reports including injury and accident reports, rehabilitation logs, and insurance claims. Maintains and updates student files.
  • Participates in selection, training, and scheduling of student workers.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
The position requires a Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, or related discipline and two years of experience dealing with the prevention and care of athletic injuries. A Masters degree is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years experience as a practicing Certified Athletic Trainer.

Knowledge and Skills
The position requires seasoned specialized knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of preventative and rehabilitative treatment used in college athletic programs. Requires a complete knowledge of the equipment, materials, and supplies used in a college athletic program. Requires in-depth knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology. Requires knowledge of occupational health and safety guidelines, health information privacy and related laws. Requires knowledge of injury evaluation and treatment techniques including first aid and the proper fitting of assistive devices. Requires knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). . Requires knowledge of proper methods for inventorying and storing equipment, materials, and supplies. Requires knowledge of pertinent health and safety regulations governing rehabilitation health care. Requires well developed language and human relation skills to explain technical concepts to others, conduct in-service training, and serve customers.

Abilities
Requires the ability to develop protocols and procedures for treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. Requires the ability to deliver and administer urgent first aid, preventative, and rehabilitative treatment to students-athletes. Requires the ability to evaluate and treat a variety of injuries. Requires the ability to apply and fit protective taping, padding, braces, and related equipment. Requires the ability to operate a variety of equipment used for treatment such as electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, isoknetic, and strength/conditioning equipment. Requires the ability to fit and modify knee and ankle braces, and other protective gear to prevent or protect student-athletes injuries. . Requires the ability to work effectively under extreme time constraints. Requires the ability to maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others.

Physical Abilities
Incumbent is required to perform work of an active nature, requiring sufficient physical stamina to carry out duties. Requires use of well-developed hand eye coordination for precise motions and use of small instruments. Requires ambulatory ability to lift mediumto-heavy weight materials, balance, and walk and stand for extended periods of time. Requires hand and arm strength to evaluate athletic injuries and perform massage on injured areas. Requires visual acuity to observe moving objects and recognize physical injuries. Requires auditory ability to project voice to a small group.

Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid driver's license. Requires a First Aid and Basic Life Support or Professional CPR certificate. Requires a National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment where health and safety considerations exist from physical labor, blood borne pathogens, and equipment.

Salary/Fringe Benefits

Grade 42 on District Classified Salary Schedule ($6,733.51 -$8,113.23/month).

Health and welfare benefits include District contribution for medical/dental/vision benefits and employee life insurance ($50,000). (Cash in lieu option available on medical insurance.)

Participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System that is also integrated with Social Security.

Conditions of Employment
This is a full-time, 12-calendar month position.
Hours of employment are: Monday thru Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.
Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.

Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.

Candidates must be able to provide proof of California residency prior to employment.
