Departmental Overview
In Spring 2013, UC Berkeley established the first of its kind institutional committee to address college student financial, food, and housing insecurity. Today, this committee is known as the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Committee. The committee is made up of undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, faculty, administrators, and off-campus community partners. The Committee is united in a commitment to build and institutionalize support systems to secure economic, food, and housing justice of our campus community. The 2017 UC Food and Housing Security Report confirmed that 39% of undergraduates and 23% of graduate students at UC Berkeley experienced food insecurity during the academic year. Based on mixed methods studies on college student basic needs, the Basic Needs Committee has identified four areas of focus: (i) research, (ii) prevention, (iii) sustainability, and (iv) advocacy.

In 2013, the Committee successfully opened UC Berkeley's food pantry as an emergency food resource. Since then the pantry has grown to serve over 1,000 students per week during the academic year; bring in thousands of pounds of recovered food and produce; and has opened to food insecure campus staff. The Committee expanded its efforts to include research, prevention programming & services, sustainability, and advocacy. In Spring 2019, the Committee opened the first-of-its-kind UC Berkeley Basic Needs Center. The working mission of our center is: We provide accessible and equitable programming and resources today; we research, innovate, advocate and engage in coalition building to lead systemic change tomorrow. These will be realized with the center's working core values of: dignity, healing, and interdependency.

The Basic Needs Food and Outreach Coordinator will serve as the staff lead for our student-led food justice programs inclusive of the food pantry, food recovery and gleaning. The position will also be responsible for leading efforts underway to develop and operate a community kitchen in the Basic Needs Center and to interface with other kitchen and food recovery efforts across campus. The position will also serve as the staff lead for the Basic Needs outreach efforts for the Basic Needs Center supporting our student lead and team with messaging, strategic outreach, and coordination to communicate our services to the most at-need populations.

Responsibilities
Program administration:
  • Provides administrative support to food justice programs and Basic Needs outreach efforts. Coordinates community kitchen infrastructure development. Coordinates with a diversity of campus and community partners to ensure strategic and effective program management and collaboration.


Strategic planning and leadership:
  • Works with Basic Needs Coordinator and Basic Needs Committee Chair to provide staff-level leadership and support the direction of student leadership in the Basic Needs work: attends and facilitates team meetings, develops and facilitates cross-campus coalitions and collaboration, supports team-wide strategy development, and represent team at campus, state and national meetings and conferences.


Student supervision:
  • Supervises five to ten student staff; coordinates students HR and hiring. Facilitates bi-weekly student leadership meetings.


Communication and project promotion:
  • Supports with Basic Needs communications and the student communication leads. Guides strategic direction of communication efforts and supports with the development of communication materials.


Finances and budgeting:
  • Works with Basic Needs leadership team to develop and revise the overall Basic Needs budget and program budgets; maintains and tracks programmatic budgets, performs reimbursements and purchasing.


Data management:
  • Works with the Basic Needs teams to regularly track, communicate, and report relevant data and to integrate feedback into program operations and accessibly communicate basic needs efforts to a range of audiences.


Professional Development & Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Stays up to date with local, state, and national trends and developments in basic needs efforts. Utilizes campus and community resources to increase knowledge of basic needs issues and approaches. Participates in research, departmental, and campus committees, programs and projects as assigned.


Required Qualifications
Leadership and Program Management Skill Sets
  • Knowledge and/or experience working and supervising students, interns, and volunteers.
  • Experience developing innovative ideas to solve problems.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong listening skills and the ability to follow and support student leadership.
  • A demonstrated ability to be a self-starter, work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong strategic thinking and system thinking skills.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Initiative, and a capacity to foster teamwork and cooperation across differences.
  • Strong overall leadership capability.
  • An interest in working in food systems, food justice, and/or urban agriculture (experience preferred)


Data, Program Management, and Administrative Skill Sets.
  • Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
  • High level of competency with Microsoft excel, and proficiency with WordPress, Constant Contact/Mailchimp, InDesign, or other publishing software.
  • Excellent data management, problem solving, organizational, and administrative skills and attention to detail.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Experience with finance/budget management and/or fundraising.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Prior administrative experience and 2 years of project coordination experience.


Power, Privilege, and Intersectionality Skill Sets
  • Advanced knowledge of the structures and systems that disproportionately impact individuals from marginalized or low-resource communities, with demonstrated awareness and engagement in addressing the particular impacts of race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, immigration status, disability, nationality, religion, veteran status, and other statuses impacted by social structures.
  • Knowledge of the intersectional impacts of identities within a framework of power and privilege, specifically understanding of the exacerbation of resource-scarcity for individuals from multiple marginalized backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and agility necessary to address the complex needs of diverse students, staff, and community partners.


Communications Skill Sets
  • Advanced communication skills to present and convey information accessibly to students, staff, faculty, and parents.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including both oral and written communication, including experience conducting presentations to large and small groups.
  • Experience with graphic design, outreach material development.


Education and Training
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in relevant area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 2 years post masters experience.


Salary & Benefits
The hourly salary range of the position is $26.35 - $31.14, commensurate with experience
