Position Summary:

Under the direction of the hazardous materials specialist, this position will assist in managing the university's hazardous waste and used oil programs, including interpreting state and federal laws and regulations relating to hazardous waste management; providing assistance in the handling, use, storage, and characteristics of hazardous materials, maintaining compliance with procedures for collecting, preparing for transport, and disposal of hazardous materials; and responding to emergencies involving hazardous materials in a timely manner.

This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or university closure.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in chemistry (preferred) or in a scientific discipline with a minimum of 10 hours in chemistry.

Minimum of 2 years of work experience in hazardous waste handling operations (a masters degree or higher in chemistry may be substituted for 2 years work experience in hazardous waste handling operations.)

Completion of an EPA/OSHA approved 40-hour hazardous waste operations/emergency response training course and/or DOT Hazmat Employee Training Course (Must be completed within 6 months of date hired.)

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters degree in chemistry (preferred) or in a scientific discipline with a minimum of 30 hours in chemistry.

Two or more years of work experience in hazardous waste handling operations.

Experience in hazardous waste handling operations in an institution of higher education.

Experience responding to emergency situations.

Good knowledge of:
Principles and analytical techniques used in chemistry;
Principles of chemical hazards;
State and federal laws and regulations relating to hazardous waste management, transportation of hazardous materials, PCB management and used oil management;
Procedures for collecting, preparing for transport and disposal of hazardous materials.

Ability to:
Assess hazards, interpret technical data;
Interpret and apply complex written material such as technical manuals, regulations, and reference materials;
Use personal protective and respiratory protection equipment; use spill response materials and equipment;
Communicate succinctly and effectively with individuals and groups;
Deal effectively with the diverse members of the university community;
Manage multiple projects and appropriately prioritize a heavy workload and client needs;
Self-motivate with a proactive, high-energy, enthusiastic can do work ethic;
Use personal computers.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Waste handling and emergency response duties require the wearing of protective and respiratory protection equipment and require lifting and/or otherwise moving objects weighing up to 500 pounds, using material handling equipment as necessary.

Willing and able to respond to;
Respond to emergencies at any hour;
Work with hazardous materials;
Participate in medical surveillance program;
Participate in specific training programs for the purpose of securing and maintaining pertinent certifications;
-Engage in minimal travel for the purpose of attending training classes and performing work-related tasks at different university facilities.

Physical ability to:
Wear and maintain appropriate personal
protective and respiratory protection equipment;
Work in adverse environmental conditions;
Lift, carry and/or otherwise move objects weighing 50 pounds or more;
Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license and live within 15 miles of the University of Idaho or be willing to relocate to within 15 miles of Moscow within six months of initial hire.
