Departmental Overview

The Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence ensure non-traditional students excel at the top public University in the world. By respecting every undergraduate as a unique individual, CE3 programs empower UC Berkeley students to achieve and lead.

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is one of several CE3 programs, and it provides holistic support to first generation, low-income, and underrepresented college students with the guidance and resources necessary to succeed at UC Berkeley, one of the best public universities in the world. EOP academic counselors and student staff work alongside amazing students who, despite their unique responsibilities and challenges, transform their lives through academic achievement and personal growth. EOP's individualized academic counseling, comprehensive support services, and extensive campus referral network help students develop the unique gifts and talents they each bring to the university while empowering them to achieve. SSS STEM is a program within EOP that provides direct academic counseling, programming, and services to selected STEM Scholars that meet the program's federal guidelines and are pursuing STEM fields.

Position Summary

The EOP/SSS STEM Counselor performs a range of counseling and advice to targeted students. Provides straightforward counseling and advice to commonly-encountered situations independently, but receives assistance for unusual situations. This position is expected to work remotely at minimum through July 2021.

  • Provides multicultural academic counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to non-traditional populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation college, underrepresented populations, etc.) who are pursuing STEM. Incorporating a variety of theoretical approaches,provides consistent individual academic counseling services to students from post-admission through graduation; conducts a comprehensive assessment/analysis of students' needs and develops a plan of action to enhance students' academic success. Assists SSS STEM students in understanding and navigating university policies. Provides financial aid counseling and academic crisis intervention. Supports in the triaging of students to respective resources.
  • Program Implementation:
  • Develops and delivers programming, including coordinating cross-departmental collaborations, for SSS STEM Scholars.
  • Provides supervision and staff support to SSS STEM student coordinators.

  • Works with academic departments, faculty, and department management to help resolve specific student academic issues. Refers students to appropriate specialized programs and resources.
  • Keeps abreast of student trends in higher education, particularly low-income and first-generation college populations pursuing STEM fields.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the theories and practice of multicultural counseling, learning, human and career development.
  • Knowledge of how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, and under prepared students in higher education pursuing STEM.
  • Experience in working with historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities, first generation college students.
  • Strong multicultural humility and ability to work with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and identities.
  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving.
  • Knowledge of conflict management and intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
  • Experience in developing, coordinating, and delivering programming/workshops/events to enhance student experience and achievement.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
  • Working knowledge of or the ability to learn common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Experience in conflict resolution
  • Experience working with student employees.
  • Experience working with first-generation college and/or low-income students in STEM fields
  • Masters in Counseling or equivalent field and / or equivalent experience / training

Salary & Benefits

The hourly pay range of the position is $24.14 - $28.79, commensurate with experience.
