Under direction of the appropriate level administrator, the Director of Development and Alumni Relations plans, organizes, and executes comprehensive giving (annual, major, and legacy) and alumni outreach programs. Initiates and participates in fundraising activities. Coordinates with campus and community partners to develop and implement fundraising activities and partnerships.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Executive Director of College Foundation or President’s designee.
May exercise supervision of support personnel assigned to fundraising and alumni relations programs.
The Director of Development and Alumni Relations is a mid-level management position. The incumbent implements strategies, systems, campaigns, and other fundraising program plans for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting current and prospective donors. Manages a portfolio of prospects and donors (individuals and corporations). Manages direct mail to prospects. Makes cold calls to solicit gifts to the College. Interacts and communicates with donors on a regular basis. Develops positive relationships and proactively conducts follow-up, as appropriate, with prospective donors with an end-goal of obtaining future or increasing current giving.
The following duties and responsibilities are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Formulates and executes short-term and long-term strategic plans for Foundation giving programs (annual, major, and legacy gifts); to include specific and measurable targets regarding definite fundraising goals, prospect management, personal contacts, stewardship activities, and solicitations (including personal contacts made per month, quarter, and year; solicitations made per quarter, and gifts closed per year to achieve Foundation fundraising goals).
Develops and provides briefings and presentations that communicate progress toward goal achievement to a variety of audiences.
Formulates and executes communications supporting giving to the College. Focus on solicitation activities in specific constituencies identified as growth opportunities. Develops ongoing Foundation messaging including, but not limited to, letters, proposals, newsletters, publications, website content, and donor exchanges.
Manages and develops the President’s Circle and other giving societies. Develops detailed program budgets. Develops and maintains up-to-date collateral materials, including but not limited to, a President’s Circle webpage. Compiles an annual evaluation of program effectiveness and recommends improvements.
Oversees and organizes special events with little to no supervision. Ensures that events build relationships with current and prospective donors and emphasizes the value of the College. Devises creative solutions with limited resources using a combination of industry best practices and individual innovation. Assumes full responsibility of event results and makes recommendations to supervisor for improvements.
Coordinates closely with deans, administrators, and others in the College community to develop strategic partnerships. Inspires a culture of campus philanthropy. Designs fundraising initiatives/campaigns to increase employee giving at the College.
Works with administration, management, faculty, and staff to identify college programs that will benefit from private support. Coordinates with appropriate individuals so that specific college programs are presented to donors in a manner most appealing to the targeted funders. Develops plans with specified outcomes for campus events, identifying target individuals, scheduling campus tours, and coordinating participants from academic, administration, and/or support staff areas.
Engages with Foundation board members and community leaders. Participates in the recruitment and onboarding of new board members. Demonstrates community involvement by participating in a variety of community organizations and attending professional meetings.
Works with local and regional businesses to develop partnerships between the College to develop and/or enhance academic programs, provide underwriting, and support.
Utilizes prospect research tools for gathering data on current and prospective donors. Develops strategies and future action plans for donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Maintains donor confidentiality and privacy as appropriate.
Manages volunteers in a way that is inclusive, flexible, fair, and engaging. Leads fundraising meetings to maximize efforts.
Maintains currency on new trends and advances in the field of fundraising and development.
Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position and the District's mission and philosophy.
Report to work on a regular and consistent basis, as scheduled, to assigned job.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Bachelor’s degree or above from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, communications, public relations, marketing, philanthropic management or related field.
Five years of increasingly responsible fundraising experience. Demonstrated track record for securing external resources at a college or university preferred. Experience managing budgets and effectively leading and developing support staff and volunteers.

4. Please describe any experience you have planning and executing high-level fundraising events.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
A valid California driver’s license.
Completion of fundraising certificate program and/or Association of Fundraising Professionals membership preferred.
Understanding and commitment to public higher education, in particular the unique role the community college system plays in access to higher education.
Experience in the management of administrative staff as well as the supervision of volunteers for fundraising purposes.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and aptitude for working with people of different ages and temperaments.
High energy level, self-motivated and self-directed to design and complete complex projects.
Extensive experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Demonstration of integrity, positivity, diplomacy, tact, courtesy, and a sense of humor.
A sophisticated understanding of donor retention strategies.
Extensive history of writing successful fundraising appeals to a diverse donor, alumni, and prospect population.
Successful track record of building and growing annual and major giving programs.
Successful track record of developing and executing creative, targeted donor/alumni/parent/friend engagement strategies.
Understanding of donor-centered fundraising and engagement philosophy.
Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or other advancement database technology.
Budget preparation and administration.
Correct English composition, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.
District and College organization, operations, objectives, policies, and procedures.
Knowledge of and adherence to highest professional, ethical standards and practices.
Knowledge of and adherence to state and federal laws such as nonprofit regulations, tax regulations, estate planning, and fiduciary responsibilities.
Possess the skills, experience, and personal qualities to garner support from internal and external constituents to successfully meet the Foundation’s annual fundraising goals.
Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimum supervision.
Strong written and oral communications skills.
Creativity, energy, and enthusiasm.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel locally as necessary.
Willingness and ability to represent the Foundation and the College at campus and community events.
Ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets.
Ability to clearly articulate the mission of the College.
Ability to analyze giving results and prepare reports for the Executive Director and volunteer leadership.
Superior ability to think creatively, motivate staff and volunteers, and bring fresh ideas and concepts.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, working both independently and as a team member.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work environment and physical demands described here are representative of those required by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Standard office and field setting. Duties are performed primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk of computer workstation or in the community attending meetings. Incumbent is subject to contact with community leaders, frequent interruptions, noise from talking or office equipment, and demanding legal timelines. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.
This position involves working some weekends and occasional evenings, as well as local travel, as required.
Incumbent regularly sits for long periods, walk short distances on a regular basis, travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work, use hands and arms, stoop or kneel or crouch to file, speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and, lift, carry, and/or move objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
