Departmental Overview

College of Letters & Science (L&S) is the largest college on the Berkeley campus. It houses half of Berkeley's senate faculty and is home to over 23,000 students, including over 60% of all undergraduates on campus. L&S has six divisions (Arts & Humanities, Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Undergraduate Studies Division and L&S Core), 38 academic departments, 57 undergraduate majors, 66 undergraduate minors, 8 masters degree programs, and 42 PhD programs.

The Office of Undergraduate Research & Scholarships (OURS) is situated within the Undergraduate Division of the College of Letter & Sciences at UC Berkeley; along with Curricular Engagement Initiatives, it serves as part of the L&S Academic Engagement unit. The central purpose of OURS is to help integrate undergraduates into UC Berkeley's dynamic and multifaceted research enterprise. OURS offers advising services to undergraduate students pursuing faculty-mentored independent research projects, competitive scholarship programs, and experiential learning opportunities within and beyond campus. In addition to supporting several student-led initiatives, including both peer-advising programs and student-run publications, OURS administers three campus-wide research programs: the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP), the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF L&S), and the Haas Scholars Program. OURS also houses the National Scholarships Office and manages both the Stronach Baccalaureate Prize and the UC Washington Program (UCDC).
