The Finance Division is responsible for the treasury, purchasing, budgeting, accounting and risk management functions for the university. The Finance Division and Risk Management & Insurance are responsible for the development and implementation of university policies, procedures and systems established to mitigate and transfer financial risk.

What You'll Do

The Investment Accountant is responsible for accounting for the University's endowment and long-term investments. Ensures that endowment gifts are accounted for in compliance with University policy and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Responsible for responding to senior management and Investment Office requests for financial analyses related to the endowment and other long-term assets.


Essential Functions:


  • Assists the Senior Investment Accountant in performing the ongoing accounting for endowment funds and all activity within two investment pools and other separately invested long-term investment assets. Tasks include monthly reconciliation of gifts, investments at cost, income, gains, and fees. Calculates unit values of investment pools, distributes endowment income for schools, prepares cash transfers to and from university working capital. Interprets donor documentation, consistently applies University policy and GAAP, updates and creates new funds in the accounting system, monitors funds pending in accordance with University policy. Records appropriate monthly entries based on reconciled information. Notifies the appropriate Tufts personnel of newly activated funds. Performs the standard monthly accounting process and assists with the year-end process, particularly the year-end General Ledger entries, allocations and account reconciliations.

  • Produces key management reports and internal and external financial statements. Participates in annual external audit of financial statements with a focus on endowment and long-term investments. Responds directly to questions from Finance managers, external auditors, and others.

  • Provides ongoing support to senior Finance management, Budget Center, school fiscal officers, and other customers by providing annual and ad-hoc income projections and other endowment related research and analysis. Coordinates with Treasury and the University Investment offices. Responds to questions about gifts, income distributions, market value, and donor restrictions.

  • On an ad-hoc basis, completes financial analysis and special projects, selects appropriate methodology, evaluates findings, presents conclusions and recommendations. Assists in resolving day-to-day departmental issues, and performs various other special projects/departmental tasks as assigned by management.

  • Focuses on continuous improvement to processes and systems efficiencies with a strong commitment to documentation and generating new solutions and ideas. Provides ongoing cross- training support to colleagues within the Finance department.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with 3 - 5 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of GAAP  
  • Advanced Microsoft Office software skills  
  • Superior spreadsheet skills  
  • Ability to work well in a fast paced, team-oriented environment  
  • Strong oral and written presentation skills  
  • Must have the ability to meet strict monthly deadlines


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of investment industry standards and practices  
  • Direct experience in accounting for investments is highly desirable  
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft accounting software
