General Statement

Installs heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, including related fixtures; checks equipment for malfunctioning; maintains and repairs equipment; and performs related work as required.

Supervision Received

Reports to Executive Director of Facilities or his designee

Supervises 1-9 technical and/or tracks personnel as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures such as air-and water filters and piping by using refrigeration, pipe fitting and structural layout techniques, blueprints, appropriate machines, tools and work aids in order to join tubing or pipes; cuts and threads pipes; solders or brazes joints; mounts compressor and condenser units; connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to electrical power sources.
  • Checks equipment for malfunctioning by observing pressure and vacuum gauges and other indicators; by adjusting controls in testing joints and connections for gas leaks; by injecting refrigerant and adjust valves, controls and pumps; and by using testing equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Maintains rebuilds and repairs equipment by replacing worn or defective parts such as switches, fuses, thermostat and electrical wiring; by pumping specified gas or fluids into systems; by adding necessary liquids; by lubricating motors and bearings; and by changing filters.
  • Calculates heat loads for new installations; analyzes and treats both open and closed water systems such as cooling towers by adding algaecides to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria.
  • Performs related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; drilling holes for mounting brackets; screwing, boring riveting and welding parts to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches and gauges; and installing shells and cabinets of systems.
  • Supervisor personnel as assigned.
  • Orders supplies and equipment.
  • Actively supports the teaching and learning process; practices honesty and integrity in and out of the classroom; strives to create and support a student-centered environment while fostering academic innovation and excellence.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the standard preventive maintenance procedures followed in connection with heating, refrigeration, ventilation, air-conditioning and related electrical systems
  • Knowledge of the methods followed in the lubrication of machinery and equipment
  • Knowledge of the methods used in the care and maintenance of small hand or power tools.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools such as pliers and screwdrivers
  • Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air-conditioning and electrical systems.
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work.
  • One year full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating refrigeration, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems, or any equivalent combination, or certification of completion of a two-year program in refrigeration and heating from a recognized institution about the high school level.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Building Management Systems and controls experience.
  • Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License or other related trade License.
